| | Robert Turpin scored the second goal of his career. |
Four minutes later Penn State went up 1-0 as David Walters found Severs in open space in the middle of the U-M penalty area. Severs capitalized on the one-on-one chance with Dzubay as he beat Michigan's keeper to his right at 12:56.
Dzubay kept the score at 1-0 with consecutive point-blank saves as he turned away Paul Omekanda and Jorma Makipaa.
Wolverine All-Big Ten first-team member Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit HS) gave the Maize and Blue its first scoring chance as Robert Wurth (Sylvania, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit HS) served a ball into the Penn State penalty area. Turpin and Nittany Lion keeper Ryan Sickman charged for the ball and both fell to turf. On his back the goalkeeper was able to kick the ball to his defender, who cleared the ball from danger, negating a Michigan goal.
The Wolverines ended the half with a one-goal deficit and with zero shots as PSU was credited with seven.
Michigan had its first chance of the second frame with Mychal Turpin was fouled just outside PSU penalty area. On the ensuing free kick freshman Adam Bruh (Roselyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) earned U-M's first shot on goal with a hard line drive to the keeper's left.
Penn State was awarded a penalty kick with 26:55 remaining when Joe Iding (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic Central HS) was called for a handball foul in the Michigan penalty area. Brent Jacquette took the PK and went to the lower left of the net, but Dzubay read the play and smothered the ball to keep the game 1-0.
Penn State took a two-goal advantage with 21:36 remaining as Joe Zewe got behind the Michigan defense and sent a bouncing ball to the right of Dzubay. Michigan defenders looked for an offsides call from the side official but were not given the call, resulting in Zewe working in open territory.
Following four consecutive corner kicks off Bruh's feet, the Robert Turpin brought Michigan within one goal as he buried a Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) rebound. White controlled the ball to his feet and hit the left post. The ball came out to the charging Turpin, who sent the ball to the back of the net at 69:11.
Robert Turpin gave the Wolverines one last push as he fired a shot at the right post, but Sickman was able to dive on the ball and preserve PSU's 2-1 victory.
Michigan (11-7-2) will hope for one of 26 at-large berths in the 48-team NCAA Championship when the pairings are announced Monday (Nov. 18) at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNEWS.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "As our program grows we look to take successive steps. We took a big step here to make it to the championship game. We felt there was going to be a little bit of left off because these guys felt like they achieved their goal, but we knew that we had the biggest game to play. Penn State came at us in the first half as we took too much time to figure out what they were doing. Overall it was an entertaining game, especially in the second half when we opened off our offense."
On playing without defender Kevin Taylor ... "Kevin is our emotional leader on the field and it is no doubt that we missed him today."
On goalkeeper Peter Dzubay ... "Peter played a great game for us. He didn't allow any rebounds and he kept every ball in front of him. The two goals that were scored were great goals and you can't put the blame on anyone."
