Next on the Tee: Women's Collegiate Shootout
The University of Michigan women's golf team will head to Franklin, Ind., Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 7-8) for the Women's Collegiate Shootout. The Maize and Blue will look to defend its 2001 title at the Legends of Indiana Golf Course. The 16-team field features seven Big Ten Conference teams. The Legends will be set up for a par of 72 and 5,874 yards.
The Women's Collegiate Shootout Field
The Women's Collegiate Shootout features 16 teams and will include: Bradley, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Kent State, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Toledo and Wisconsin.

The Women's Collegiate Shootout will consist of 54 holes, 36 of which will be played on Monday (Oct. 7) followed by 18 on Monday (Oct. 8).

The Women's Collegiate Shootout Scoring Format
Scoring for the Women's Collegiate Shootout will be six players, count the low four scores each round.
The Michigan Lineup at the Women's Collegiate Shootout
The Wolverines will carry six players for the Michigan squad at the Women's Collegiate Shootout. Senior Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS), sophomore Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and junior Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) head up the six-member team. Freshman Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS), fifth-year senior Stephanie Stasik (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado HS) and junior/sophomore Courtney Goebel (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) make up the rest of the team positions headed to the Legends.
Last Year: Co-Medalist Benedict Leads U-M to Shootout Title
With a final-round score of 293, the Wolverines came from six strokes behind to claim the 2001 Shootout at the Legends (Oct. 8-9) team title the Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, Ind. The Maize and Blue tallied team totals of 290, 294 and 293 for an 877 total to surpass 36-hole leader Wisconsin (289-289-301/879) and win by two strokes. The title gave the Wolverines their third straight tournament team trophy of the fall. Kim Benedict won her second career individual title, tying for medalist honors with Kent State's Martina Gillen. Benedict tied a school record with her first-round 68, becoming the second Wolverine ever to break 70, and followed rounds of 74 and 70 for a career-best 54-hole tournament total of 212. Other U-M individual finishes included: Misia Lemanski, tied for sixth (75-70-75/220); Laura Olin, tied for ninth (72-76-73/221); LeAnna Wicks, tied for 24th (77-75-75/227); and Cortney Reno, tied for 42nd (75-75-81/231).
Last Week: Season Bests Help U-M to Fourth at Lady Northern
The Wolverines tallied a final team round of 304 to move up one spot to fourth at the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 28-29) at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa. The Wolverines finished with a season-best 54-hole total of 910 after shooting 306 and 300 during Saturday's first two rounds. Kim Benedict had a season-best performance en route to finishing as the top Wolverine, placing fifth with a 223 total. She carded back-to-back season-best rounds of 74 Saturday and followed with her final 75. Laura Olin continued to play consistent golf as she tied for 12th with a season-best 227 total (76-75-76). Sarah Kruer had a career tournament as she tied for 15th with a career-best 229 total (79-74-76) that included a career best-tying 74 in the second round. Amy Schmucker tied for 37th (79-80-77/236), Stephanie Stasik tied for 41st (77-77-84/238), and Courtney Goebel placed 61st (86-82-85/253).
Wolverine Start to Heat Up
The Wolverines' 910 total at the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 28-29) is their season-best 54-hole finish. Michigan's previous best this year was the 928 tallied at the Wolverine Invitational in the opening tournament of the year. In addition, the Maize and Blue's second-round 300 is a season-best team total, bettering the 305 tallied in the second round of the Mary Fossum Invitational the week before.
Getting To Be a Regular Occurrence
For the fourth straight tournament, coach Kathy Teichert will be going with the same lineup. Even though the playing positions have shifted from tournament to tournament, Kim Benedict, Laura Olin, Stephanie Stasik, Sarah Kruer, Courtney Goebel and Amy Schmucker have comprised the Wolverines "A" squad.
Kruer Hits Best Marks Again
Junior Sarah Kruer's one-over-par 74 in the second round of the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 28-29) tied her career-best single-round total. She tied the 74 she fired in the first round of the Hatter Spring Fling (March 17-18, 2001). Her 229 total at the Lady Northern also is a career-best performance, topping her 232 at the 2000 Shootout at the Legends (Oct. 9-10, 2000).
Here We Go Again
Kim Benedict and Laura Olin are starting to battle once again ... this time for the scoring average race. Olin holds a 0.66-stroke lead after the first three tournaments with a 76.11 scoring average, compared to Benedict's 76.77. Last season Benedict won her third straight team scoring title with a school-record 76.48, while Olin (76.94) was third. Misia Lemanski was second with a 76.63. Benedict has led the team in scoring average in each of her three season, setting and lowering the school record in each of those seasons.
Inside the Numbers
With her rounds of 76, 75 and 76 at the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 28-29), Laura Olin has now fired 14 straight rounds of 78 or better.
Kim Benedict has played in 40 consecutive tournaments for the Wolverines.
