Next on the Tee: The Xavier Invitational
The University of Michigan men's golf team will head to Cincinnati, Ohio, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 14-15) for the Xavier Invitational at the King Island Resort at the Grizzly Tournament course. The 18-team field, which includes four Big Ten Conference and four Mid-American Conference teams, will play 36 holes Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Tuesday's final round will begin with tee times at 8 a.m. The Grizzly Course will be set up for a par of 71 and 6,550 yards for the 54-hole tournament.
The Xavier Invitational Field
The Xavier Invitational features 18 teams and will include: Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Georgetown, Indiana, Iowa, Marshall, Michigan, Ohio, Penn State, Richmond, St. Joseph's, Western Kentucky, Wright State and Xavier.
The Xavier Invitational Schedule
The Xavier Invitational will consist of 54 holes, 36 of which will be played on Monday (Oct. 14) followed by 18 on Tuesday (Oct. 15).

The Xavier Invitational Scoring Format
Scoring for the Wolverine Invitational will be five players, count the low four scores each round.
The Michigan Lineup at the Xavier Invitational
The Wolverines will carry five players for the Michigan squad at the Xavier Invitational. Junior/sophomore Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS), junior Dave Nichols (Mesa, Ariz./Rochester Adams HS, Mich.) and redshirt freshman Mark McIntosh (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS) head up the Maize and Blue team. Freshman Blake Burman (Miami, Fla./Palmetto HS) and redshirt freshman Jimmy Wisinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) round of the rest of the Wolverines' five-man team.
Last Time at the Xavier Invitational: Wolverines Finish Fifth
The Wolverines moved up one spot to finish fifth at the Xavier Invitational at the Golf Center at Kings Island's Grizzly Course in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Wolverines finished the tournament with an 863 team total after rounds of 285, 284 and 294 in the 54-hole event. Andy Matthews led the Wolverines as he tied for 11th. Matthews fired rounds of 70-69-77 for a team-best 216 total. Dave Nichols closed out a consistent tournament with a 72 in the final round to tie for 24th with a career-best 218 total. He fired rounds of 74 and 72 during the first day. Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) and Andrew Chapman both tied for 33rd. Carlton had a consistent tournament, carding rounds of 73-73-74 for a 220 total. Chapman fired a career-best 68 in the first round and followed with a 70 in the second round, but fell off in the third with an 82 for his 220 total. Kyle Kilcherman tied for 53rd (78-74-71/223).
Last Time on the Links: U-M Finishes Ninth in Own Tourney
The Wolverines used their second straight team tally of 292 to improve two positions and finish ninth at the Wolverine Invitational at the U-M Golf Course. The Wolverines fired rounds of 297 and 292 to sit in 11th after Saturday's 36 holes. With Rob Tighe's even-par 71 pacing the Wolverines in the final round, the Maize and Blue tied their season-best 54-hole score at 881.
Tighe led the Wolverines by tying for 12th with round scores of 76, a career-best one-under 70 and an even-par 71 for a career-best 217 total. Dave Nichols tied a 54-hole tournament career best with his 218 tally after a career-best two-under 69 in the first round followed by rounds of 74 and 75. Mark McIntosh tied for 31st after opening with a 74 before shooting a career-best one-under 70 in the second round. He closed out with a 78 for a 222 tournament total. Scott Carlton rebounded from swing troubles during the first day to tie for 65th after a one-over 72 in the final round for a 229 total (79-78-72). Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) tied for 70th at 230 (78-78-74).
Playing as individuals Chris Kellogg (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) tied for 54th with a 227 total (77-71-79) that included a career-best, even-par 71 in the second round. Jimmy Wisinski tied for 61st with a career-best 228 total (81-78-69) after charging back in the final round with a career-best, two-under 69. Other scores includes: Blake Burman, tied for 73rd (82-72-77/231); Bruce Svechota-Kingsbury (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills School), 89th (74-85-85/244); and Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic HS), 90th (80-74-91/245).
Wolverines Hit Mark Again
For the second straight tournament the Wolverines finished with a season-best 881 54-hole team total. At the Wolverine Invitational the Maize and Blue tallied rounds of 297-292-292, while the previous week at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29) the Maize and Blue tallied rounds of 291-292-298. The Wolverines fired a 913 (300-304-309) in their opening tournament of the year at the Ridges (Sept. 14). The Wolverines are averaging 297.22 strokes per team round so far this season.
Steadily Improving
Junior/sophomore Rob Tighe's continues to improve with each round in each tournament. His second-round score of one-under 70 at the Wolverine Invitational set a new career best. It topped the 72 he fired in the final round of the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29). In addition, his 217 54-hole total at the Wolverine Invitational was also a career best, topping the 223 he had at the Ridges (Sept. 28-29). Tighe leads the Wolverines with a 73.44 scoring averaging after three tournaments, which is now a career best. Last season, he only competed in two of the 11 tournaments.
Nichols Hits the Mark
Junior Dave Nichols' first-round, two-under 69 at the Wolverine Invitational was a career-best single-round score. His previous best tally was 70 fired in the first round at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29) and in the first round of the Kepler Intercollegiate (April 14-15, 2001). Nichols' 218 total tied his career-best 54-hole total with the 218 he tallied at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 8-9, 2001). Currently, Nichols is second on the Wolverine squad with a career-best pace of 73.88.
Going Low
Redshirt freshman Jimmy Wisinski's final-round score of two-under-par 69 at the Wolverine Invitational set a new career best by nine strokes and marked the first time in his career he has broken the 70-stroke barrier. His previous best was 78 in the second round of the Wolverine Invitational and in the second round of the Ridges (Sept. 14-15).
Resetting the Books
Senior/junior Chris Kellogg's second-round score of even-par 71 at the Wolverine Invitational set a new career best. It topped the back-to-back 73s he fired first in the first and second rounds of the 2001 Bruce Fossum Invitational (April 28-29, 2001). Redshirt freshman Mark McIntosh's second-round score of one-under 70 at the Wolverine tied a career best, matching the final-round 70 he had at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29) a week ago.
Make It Five Now
When Blake Burman tees off at the Xavier Invitational, he will become the fifth Wolverine this year to play in his first official tournament as a Wolverine. Technically, Burman played in his first collegiate tournament at the Wolverine Invitational competing as an individual, but this will mark the first time his is in coach Andrew Sapp's scoring lineup. Earlier this year, Mark McIntosh, Bruce Svechota-Kingsbury and Jimmy Wisinski made their collegiate debuts at the The Ridges (Sept. 14-15), while Christian Vozza made his the following week at the Northern Intercollegiate.
