The Wolverines dominated everything but the scoreboard, outshooting the Spartans 43-21, including 16-3 in the third period, but Spartans goaltender Ryan Miller stood on his head, stopping 42 of U-M's scoring chances.
Michigan State took a 1-0 lead 12:59 into the second period on a goal by freshman forward Mike Lalonde, who tipped a rebound past U-M senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.). Junior defenseman Brad Fast shot the puck into the zone, bouncing it off the glass and onto the stick of freshman forward Ash Goldie, who spun around and put a shot on net from the right faceoff circle. Lalonde was parked on the left side of the net and scooped up the rebound for the score.
Michigan tied the score with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation when freshman forward Dwight Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) one-timed a shot over Miller's left shoulder. Freshman defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) fed Helminen the puck on a backhanded pass from the high slot, hitting him on the right side of the crease.
Each team went scoreless on the power play as Michigan extended its penalty-killing streak to 29 straight. U-M failed to convert on each of its three chances, including a 46-second stretch with a two-man advantage.
The Wolverines will remain home to close out their season-high five-game homestand, hosting the Bowling Green Falcons on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. on both nights at Yost Ice Arena.

N O T E S
Michigan is 0-0-2 against Michigan State this season, marking the first time in the history of the series the two teams have tied in back-to-back outings.
The Wolverines played their ninth overtime game of the season tonight, the most since playing in nine extra-stanza affairs during the 1989-90 campaign.
Michigan has been held to one goal in each of its last two games. For the season, the Wolverines are averaging 3.6 goals per game.
The Spartans and Wolverines will meet one more time in the regular season, skating in a non-conference affair on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
The 6,986 fans in attendance set a record for the largest crowd at Yost Ice Arena since the facility's major renovation prior to the 1997-98 campaign. The previous mark was 6,917 against Minnesota on Nov. 23, 2001.
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "Well, as an overview, I really liked our team tonight. We wound up having to play from behind and we played well and we got the goal we needed. With a break or two, we could have had another one. I just think it was a great team effort, considering the fact that (Mike) Cammalleri is out, and I just thought a lot of guys really picked it up and had a strong game. It was a great game for the fans, the game could have gone either way, a lot of chances and close calls."
On the atmosphere at Yost ... "It's an awesome atmosphere when the crowd senses there is something on the line like there was tonight, this kind of rivalry. We're going to do this four times next year with Michigan State so we're going to see this every year, at least once, maybe twice."
On the play of the freshmen ... "I think it started with the upperclassmen, (Jed) Ortmeyer, (John) Shouneyia in particular, (Jay) Vancik as a captain and a senior did a great job in leading the way. The freshmen have built a lot of confidence now and gained a lot of experience. They've played serious roles in serious games and I don't think this game fazed them a bit."
On MSU goalie Ryan Miller's performance ... "He is their best player and he was their best player tonight and he had to be. Obviously he's got something going in this building. He's had two strong games, only given up one goal in two games and we've had a lot of great chances."
Freshman Defenseman Eric Werner
On Michigan's goal ... "It started off at the top of the blueline. I took a pretty good hit into the boards. I got on my feet and I saw the puck lying there. I took off and then saw Dwight (Helminen) coming from the right side and I just dished it over. I don't even know how it went in."
On his role in the game tonight ... "We're down 1-0, they turn into a defensive team and we needed offense. I can't take a chance but strive on and try to make something happen out there. I just try to fill an offensive end. You still have to worry about defense. You're still down 1-0, you need to get a goal to tie it up."
Junior Forward John Shouneyia
On the feeling of relief after Michigan finally scored after so many shots on goal ... "We definitely outplayed them, we know as a team that the puck isn't going to go in every night and he's a good goalie, but I think we should have had a little more traffic in front. But we outplayed them the whole game and we got some confidence out of the game. We know we should have won."
On the absence of Mike Cammalleri ... "Everyone stepped it up. It's hard to go in the room every night and say that every player played well, but tonight every player came out and gave it their all. If we can do that every night, we'll be alright."
On the fans at Yost being the best he's seen ... "No question about it. From warmups on, the crowd was going crazy. It's a great feeling once you step on the ice and you get shivers because the crowd is behind you and everyone in the stands is as intense as we are on the ice."
