STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team dropped its first game of the season in a 4-0 loss to Penn State on Sunday (Sept. 9), bringing the Wolverines' varsity-record three-game winning streak to an abrupt end. It was the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams.
Redshirt freshman Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson HS) stopped two of three shots in the first half, keeping Penn State (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) off the board until 29:07, when Ben Dawson deflected Derek Potteiger's pass into the net. Both teams ended the half with two shots on goal, and the score at 1-0 in the Nittany Lions' favor.
Penn State senior defenseman Chris Stout put the Nittany Lions up 2-0 at 63:51 on a redirected cross from Chad Severs. Three minutes later, midfielder Brent Jacquette blasted a shot from the top of the box to beat Zawacki. Penn State was held off the board until 84:55, when Ken Lear headed in a shot from the baseline, sealing the win.
Goalkeeper Eric Earnhardt made two saves to help Penn State keep the Wolverines off the board. U-M freshman Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) and sophomore midfielder Ian Hirschfield (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest HS) had the two shots on goal for the Wolverines.
Michigan received its second yellow card of the season at 76:43 when captain J.J. Kern (Trenton, Mich./Lake Orion HS) was called for unsportsmanlike conduct approximately one minute after an almost identical call on Penn State's Ben Dawson. Michigan was called for 20 fouls, while Penn State committed 32, 20 of them coming in the second half.
The Wolverines (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) will look to get back on track against Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo at the Louisville Invitational on Friday (Sept. 14, 5:30 p.m.) in Louisville, Ky.
