ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team rebounded to finish seventh at its own Wolverine Invitational after the final round Sunday (Sept. 30) at the U-M Golf Course. The Wolverines shot 292 Sunday to give them a tournament total of 593 after their first-round 301.
Baylor came roaring back with a final round total of 278 -- six under par -- to surpass Minnesota (285-294/579) for the Wolverine Invitational team title. Baylor's improvement of 18 strokes, after the Bears' 296 first-round total, helped seal the win and shatter the 36-hole tournament record with a 574 team total. The Bears lowered the record by 23 strokes as the previous best was 597 by Indiana in 1981 (the event was 36 holes from 1981-83).
Ball State's Mike Gant (70-70) and Baylor's Ryan Baca (72-68) finished tied for medalist honors after regulation with 140 totals, but Baca was awarded the first-place trophy after winning a scorecard playoff starting with the No. 1 handicap hole. On the par-4 second -- the No. 1 handicap hole -- Baca made a birdie 3 in the final round while Gant bogeyed.
As for Michigan, senior Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) led the way for the Wolverines as he tied for 20th after firing rounds of 73 and 74 for a 147 total. Senior Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) came back with a career-best-tying 69 in the final round to tie for 36th with a 149 total after shooting an 80 in the first round.
Redshirt freshman Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) and sophomore Dave Nichols (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) both tied for 42nd after tallying 150 tournament totals. Tighe fired rounds of 76-74, while Nichols had back-to-back rounds of 75. Senior Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) tied for 63rd after firing rounds of 77-76 for a 153 total.
Redshirt sophomores Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) and Chris Kellogg (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) competed as individuals, with Carlton (74-74/148) tying for 27th and Kellogg (74-77/151) tying for 48th.
The Wolverines will have a week to prepare before their next tournament, the Xavier Invitational, slated for Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 8-9) at Kings Island Resort in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Wolverine Invitational Notes
• Notre Dame's Steve Colnitis highlighted the final round of the Wolverine Invitational with a hole-in-one on hole No. 8. Colnitis' 5-iron from 159 yards away hit the green within three feet of the pin and then rolled in for his second career hole-in-one.
• Baylor's winning total of 574 shattered the Wolverine Invitational record for best 36-hole tournament team total by 23 strokes. The previous best team 36-hole team total was 597 by Indiana in 1981. This is just the fourth time the event has been 36 holes (1981-83, 2001).
• Baylor is the first non-Midwest team to win the team title at the Wolverine Invitational. Minnesota and Ohio State have won three titles, Michigan has two and Ball State, Indiana and Miami (Ohio) each have one.
• Ball State's Mike Gant (70-70) and Baylor's Ryan Baca (72-68) both tallied the lowest 36-hole Wolverine Invitational tournament total with their 140 totals. The prior best for a 36-hole tournament was 144 (73-71) by Eastern Michigan's Marc Dingman at the 1981 tournament.
Michigan Notes
• Kyle Kilcherman's final-round tally of 69 (two under par) ties his career best, matching the 69 (-3) he shot in the opening round of U-M's first tournament this season, the Badger Invitational (Sept. 8-9).
• Andy Matthews continued his streak of consecutive tournaments played. He now has played 39 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue.
