MASON, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's golf team moved up one spot Tuesday (Oct. 9) to finish fifth at the Xavier Invitational at the Golf Center at Kings Island's Grizzly Course. The Wolverines finished the tournament with a season-best 863 team total after rounds of 285, 284 and 294 in the two-day event.

Paced behind its second-round total, Western Kentucky (286-276-292/854) held onto its lead to win the team title, fending off host Xavier (280-287-290/857), which finished second. Marshall (281-283-295/859) was third and Penn State (293-283-284/860) was fourth.
Ohio's Erik Herberth took home the individual medalist honor. Herberth finished with an 11-under-par total of 202 -- six shots better than the previous tournament record of 208 -- after rounds of 67, 64 and 71. His second-round score of 64 tied the tournament record. Xavier's Miles Maillet (67-69-70/206) was the runner-up and Western Kentucky's Eric Mason (69-66-72/207) was third.
The Maize and Blue will head to Durham, N.C., to participate in the Duke Golf Classic on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 14-15. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Duke Golf Club. The Wolverines added the event to their schedule after Minnesota's PSI Net Collegiate Invitational, scheduled for Sept. 17-18, was cancelled due to the national tragedies of Sept. 11.
