ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team sits in a tie for 10th place at its own Wolverine Invitational after the first round held Friday (Sept. 28) at the U-M Golf Course. The Wolverines tallied a team total of 301, tying them with Iowa for the 10th position.
Led by even-par rounds of 71 from three players, including 2000 Wolverine Invitational medalist Wilhelm Schauman, two-time defending champion Minnesota sits atop the leaderboard after tallying a first-round total of 285. The Golden Gophers have a seven-shot lead over Michigan State and Ball State, which are tied for second after 292 totals. West Florida (293) is fourth and Indiana is fifth (294).
Five players are tied for the individual lead with two-under-par 69s. Wisconsin's Jon Turcott, Michigan State's Eric Jorgensen, Northwestern's Tom Johnson, West Florida's Ty Harris and Notre Dame's Brandon Lunke all sit atop the leaderboard.
For Michigan, senior Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) is the leading Wolverine with a two-over-par 73 in the first round. Sophomore David Nichols (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) is right behind after his four-over 75.
The Wolverine Invitational will take a one-day break due to the rescheduled Michigan-Illinois football game Saturday (Sept. 29), but the tournament will conclude Sunday (Sept. 30) with an 8 a.m. tee time start for the final round at the U-M Golf Course.
