ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team got its second win and second shutout of the season on Monday (Sept. 17), defeating Detroit 4-0 at the U-M Soccer Field. The game was added to Michigan's schedule after the Wolverines' weekend trip to Connecticut was cancelled due to the tragic events in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
The Maize and Blue dominated the Titans from the kickoff, recording 19 shots to Detroit's one in the first half. Freshman Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) scored her second goal in as many games with 12 minutes left in the first half. Midfielder Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) passed the ball up the sideline to forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS), who then delivered the ball to Morgan for the open shot.
U-M was able to maintain the momentum, attacking the Titans defense for four consecutive minutes with six shots and four shots on goal. Nicole D'Hondt (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) was the first Wolverine to get a shot off inside the box, but Titan goalkeeper Alison Dube kicked it out. The rebound landed directly at the feet of Morgan, who also had a chance but was unable to score. Morgan's rebound landed to the left of the net, where Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) had her shot blocked in the air by a Titan defender before Crumpton put it in the upper left corner for the two-goal lead.
The Maize and Blue began the second half with six early shots and was awarded a penalty kick after a Titan midfielder fouled Sullivant inside the box just 2:37 into the period. Detroit's backfield was out of position and took the penalty in an attempt to keep Sullivant from getting a free shot on net. Sullivant took advantage of the opportunity, firing a shot high to the left side for U-M's first goal on a penalty shot this season.
With 6:27 remaining in the game, freshman Laney Rosin (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton HS) scored on a breakaway to cap the 4-0 win for the Wolverines. The goal came from an initial pass by Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hill HS) but was moved past the defense after the ball hit off the head of a Titan defender.
Starter Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) and Bre Bennett (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) each played a half in goal for the Wolverines and shared the shutout. Neither was forced to make a save.
The Wolverines open their Big Ten Conference schedule on the road this weekend, playing at Illinois on Friday (Sept. 21, 7 p.m. CDT) and Iowa on Sunday (Sept. 23, 1 p.m. CDT).
