ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Wrapping up its first weekend of action, the University of Michigan field hockey team evened its record Sunday (Aug. 26) afternoon by upsetting defending national champion Old Dominion, 1-0, at Ocker Field.
Freshman Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) scored the game's lone goal, netting her first collegiate marker three minutes into the second half. Hortillosa beat Old Dominion goalkeeper Marybeth Freeman to the deflection of sophomore April Fronzoni's (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) initial shot, then swept the ball into the cage while sliding on her stomach.
"It was a beautiful goal," said Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "Adrienne is capable of doing amazing things and that is why we recruited her. She has incredible skills and goes all out all the time; that was evident in her goal today."
Michigan's defense also played a key role in the victory as it held the Lady Monarchs to just three shots on goal, including none in the first half. Old Dominion was unable to generate any offense until it took its fourth penalty corner 10 minutes into the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) stopped all three Monarch shots while posting her fourth career shutout and her first since Oct. 20, 2000, against Penn State.
"Our defense handled the pressure well, as did the entire team," said Pankratz. "I'm proud of the way our team came back after a tough loss yesterday to Wake Forest and was able to compete against a top caliber team like Old Dominion."
The loss drops Old Dominion to 0-2 on the season. The Lady Monarchs dropped their season opener on Saturday (Aug. 25) in a 3-2 overtime loss at Michigan State.
"We have to revaluate and regroup," said Old Dominion head coach Beth Anders. "Michigan played hard and with a lot of energy and that is why they won the game."
Michigan, which dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Wake Forest on Saturday, will conclude its season-opening four-game homestand next week, hosting Virginia and Louisville in a pair of non-conference mathcups. Michigan will host the Cavaliers on Friday, (Aug. 31) at 4 p.m. before entertaining the Cardinals on Sunday, (Sept. 1), at 2 p.m.
