Tasch, Wolverines Record Second Straight Shutout

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior forward Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) and sophomore defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid HS) scored their first goals of the season as the University of Michigan field hockey team defeated Virginia 2-0 on Friday afternoon (Aug. 31) at Ocker Field.
Johnson also collected her first defensive save of the season, with 9:40 left in the game, to help preserve the second consecutive shutout for senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS). Tasch stopped all four Cavalier shots while posting a shutout in back-to-back games for the first time in her career.
"Stephanie had a great day for us today, and our defense played well," said Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "We let Stephanie take the first penalty stroke of the year, which she executed well and then she had a huge defensive save which kept the momentum going in our favor."
Powers broke a scoreless tie 45:33 into the game by taking a feed from senior defender Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster) and driving it past Virginia goalkeeper Emily White. Johnson gave the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage less than 13 minutes later as she beat White on a penalty stroke by placing the ball in the top right corner of the net.
"It's great to have a good game, but I like having something more concrete to take away from it which was us getting the win," said Johnson. "I did like knowing that I helped give us a little momentum with a goal and I was a part of some pivotal minutes in the game."
Michigan will return to action Sunday (Sept. 2) when it hosts Louisville at 2:30 p.m. at Ocker Field.
