U-M Earns NCAA Berth, Draws Kentucky in Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team was selected Thursday (May 3) to compete in the 64-team field of the 2001 NCAA Championships, which begins Saturday, May 12, at regional sites across the country. The Wolverines (12-9, 6-4 Big Ten) will make their fourth straight NCAA tournament berth and seventh appearance in the last eight years.

Michigan will travel to Mobile, Ala., to compete in a four-team regional hosted by South Alabama on Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13. The Wolverines face Kentucky (14-14) at 9 a.m. CDT in the first round Saturday, and with a victory would meet the winner of No. 9-seeded South Alabama (25-2) and Army (17-6).

The remaining 16 squads from the regional competition advance to the team championship finals May 19-22 at the University of Georgia.

Following is Michigan's regional bracket:

First Round -- Saturday, May 12
Match 1: Michigan (12-9) vs. Kentucky (14-14), 9 a.m. CDT
Match 2: #9 South Alabama (25-2) vs. Army (17-6), 2 p.m. CDT

Second Round -- Sunday, May 13
Regional Championship: Winners of Match 1 and 2, 1 p.m. CDT
