PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Michigan men's track and field started out strong on the first day of the prestigious Penn Relays Thursday (April 26) at Penn's Franklin Field. Senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) led a trio of Wolverines in the 10,000-meter run with a third-place and NCAA provisional time of 29:32.81.
In addition to Lawrence, the other two Wolverines finished in the top 15 out of 34 competitors. Junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) and redshirt freshman Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS) came in 14th and 15th, respectively. Wisniewski finished second in the event at last year's Penn Relays.
Lawrence becomes the first Wolverine this outdoor season to receive an NCAA provisional mark. Wisniewski represented the Maize and Blue at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10,000-meter run, taking 13th.
Action at the Penn Relays continues through Saturday (April 28). In addition, a group of the Wolverines are competing in the Hillsdale Relays in Hillsdale, Mich.
