RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team concluded its first full-squad outdoor meet of the season at the Raleigh Relays on Saturday (March 31). The non-scoring, two-day event saw five top-five performances by the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines began the weekend Friday with strong showings from its long distance areas. Junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) tied for the highest Michigan finish, coming in third in the 10,000-meter run, with redshirt freshman Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS) adding a 10th-place finish in the event. In the 5,000, senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) came in 11th.
Michigan also had its senior co-captain Josh Sellers (Syracuse, N.Y./Genesee HS) sprint his way to a seventh-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles. Also on the track, the Wolverines took fifth in the 4 x 1,500-meter relay for their highest relay finish over the two days.
In the field events, Michigan senior Nick Rogers (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm HS) placed third in the discus in his first outdoor appearance of the 2001 season.
The Wolverines returned to the track on Saturday for another great day of competition. Senior Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) started things off by taking 10th place in the 200-meter dash. Freshmen Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) and Mason Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) both did well as Turner was third in the 800-meter run and Ward took fifth in the 1,500.
The relays were working slightly better on day two for Michigan, which finished ninth in the 4 x 400-meter relay and placed seventh in the 4 x 800.
The Wolverines will be back on the track next week (April 6-7) at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
