Mees Earns 20th Win as U-M Beats Louisiana-Lafayette

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan second-year head coach Mark Mees picked up his 20th victory as the No. 29-ranked U-M men's tennis team defeated Louisiana-Lafayette by a 5-2 score Sunday (Feb. 4) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (4-0) won the doubles point and claimed victories in four of the six singles matches.
Michigan won the doubles team point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, while Louisiana-Lafayette's Jason Pieters and Jakub Ilowski earned an 8-6 victory at the top spot. Juniors Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) and Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) won an impressive 8-3 match against Tomi Winnig and Johann van der Westhuizen at No. 2. The Wolverines secured the team point as junior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and freshman Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) beat Bruno Puzzi and Bobby Hawkins by an 8-6 score at No. 3.
The Wolverines closed out the victory with straight-set wins by Cox, McCain, Novak and Jackson at the No. 2 through No. 5 singles spots. The Ragin' Cajuns claimed their first team point as van der Westhuizen won a 7-5, 6-4 match against sophomore Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) at the No. 6 spot. The final point came in the only three-set match of the day, a 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(13) victory by Pieters over U-M junior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) in a super tiebreaker at the top singles spot.
Michigan hosts Ball State Saturday (Feb. 10, noon) at the Varsity Tennis Center before beginning the Big Ten Conference dual match season at Northwestern in two weeks (Saturday, Feb. 17, noon CST).
