SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team had its second and final day of competition at the Meyo Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 3) on the campus of Notre Dame. Junior Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) won the 200-meter dash (21.74) for the Wolverines' only event title in the non-scoring, two-day event, which included Tennessee, Miami (Fla.), Duke, Michigan State and Kentucky among other programs.
However, Okenwa was not alone with success in the sprints. Co-captain Josh Sellers (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee HS) came back from an injury to finish runner-up in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.34. Teammate Kevin Lamb (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) joined Sellers in the top 10, coming in seventh. Senior Ravi Smith (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup HS) continued his strong season, posting a second-place finish in the 500 (1:04.39).
In the middle distance, the Wolverines had their top candidate in the 800-meter run in Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS), who finished runner-up. Tom Greenless (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) and Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) placed fifth in the 1,000 and mile run, respectively.
The Maize and Blue was defeated in the 1,600-meter relay for the first time this season as the Wolverines took third behind Tennessee and Georgetown.
The field events were highlighted by a pair of seniors. Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) placed third in the pole vault with a height of 16-8 3/4. Fellow senior Oded Padan (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance) posted a distance of 45-9 3/4 in the triple jump, which was good for fourth place.
The Wolverines will be back in action next Saturday (Feb. 10) for the Michigan Intercollegiate in Ypsilanti, Mich.
