COLUMBUS, Ga. -- On the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan softball team defeated No. 6 Louisiana State 3-1 in extra innings Sunday (Feb. 25) but had its Gold bracket consolation final against No. 10-ranked Washington cancelled due to rain. Freshman Monica Schock (Rialto, Calif./Eisenhower HS) got the key hit against LSU with a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning.

The Wolverines (5-6) scored first in the fourth inning to set the tone of the game. Junior Stephanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) led off with a single and advanced all the way to third on a wild pitch. After an out to rightfield off Marissa Young's (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) bat, Volpe scored on a throwing error.

LSU (13-4) tied the game in its half of the fourth after an error allowed a batter to reach first. With one out, the Tigers knocked a single to score the run.

With the game tied at 1-1 after seven, the international tie-breaker was employed in the eighth, with a runner placed at second to start the inning. Melissa Moulden (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) was placed at second and advanced to third on a sacrifice. After a walk and stolen base by Rebecca Tune (Aloha, Ore./Jesuit HS), Schock drove in the game-winning runs.

Marie Barda (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South HS) started the game in the circle but was relieved in the sixth inning by Young, who picked up her third win of the season and second of the weekend.

Michigan next takes the field on Tuesday (Feb. 27) at Mississippi State with the first pitch set at 6 p.m. CST in Starkville, Miss.
