The Quest for 13
Michigan is looking to win its 13th Big Ten Conference team championship in the 20-year history of the competition, which began in 1982. From 1987 to 1998, U-M set a precedent in winning an incredible 12 consecutive team titles. Head coach Jim Richardson and diving coach Dick Kimball guided the way in all 12 Big Ten team titles.
Returning Individual Big Ten Champions
Senior Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS), U-M's only returning individual champion, is the three-time defending champion in the 100-yard backstroke and will attempt to become the eighth person in conference history to win four straight titles in one individual event. She would join former Wolverines Alecia Humphrey (1992-95, 100- and 200-yard backstrokes) and Shannon Shakespeare (1997-2000, 200-yard individual medley) in the select group.
The Wolverines have three other returning Big Ten champions from last year -- one seniors, a junior and one sophomore. Crisman and senior Missy Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School) each swam on the victorious 200- and 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams. Sophomore Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) was a member of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, while junior Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel Ind./Carmel HS) swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay team.

Recap of 2000 Big Ten Championships
Last year the Maize and Blue finished second of 11 teams in the Big Ten Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships (Feb. 17-19) in Indianapolis, Ind. U-M took first in seven events -- four individual races and three relays -- and scored 501 points to finish second to Minnesota (562.5), which won its second straight championship.
U-M's Shannon Shakespeare was named Diver of the Championship after becoming just the seventh person to win an event four straight years, doing so in the 200-yard individual medley with a Big Ten-record time (1:57.66). She was also a part of the 400-yard medley relay team that finished in a championship record time of 3:39.80. Shakespeare had a first-place performance in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:46.37 and set her last record of the meet in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.90. Jennifer Crisman set a meet record in the 100-yard backstroke (54.21), slicing 0.02 off her own mark from the previous year.
Absolute Arsenault
Freshman Samantha Arsenault (Peabody, Mass./Gardner HS) has not slowed down since returning from Sydney, Australia, with her 2000 Olympic gold medal in the 800-yard freestyle. As of the Feb. 6 national rankings, Arsenault is among the national top 25 in five of the six freestyle races, including a No. 2 listing in the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.91). Eight other U-M swimmers are listed in the national top 25 times in their respective events.

Diver of the Week Part II
Freshman Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) was named Big Ten Diver of the Week (Jan. 22-27) after winning the one-meter (297.60) and three-meter (307.56) diving events at Northwestern (Jan. 27), both with NCAA zone qualifying marks. This was the second time in three weeks that Kelemen had received the honor and the third time this season. She also was honored on Dec. 6 and Jan. 16.
Kelemen, who has won 11 one- and three-meter diving events this season, is looking to become U-M's first Big Ten diving champion since Carrie Zarse (1993-96) won the one-meter in 1993 and Mary Fischbach (1984, '87-88) won back-to-back three-meter titles in 1987-88.
Last Time in the Pool
The Wolverines have been off for nearly three weeks since dropping dual meets on the road at No. 18 Notre Dame (157-143, Jan. 26) and No. 23-ranked Big Ten Confefence rival Northwestern (157-143, Jan. 27).
Despite their loss to Notre Dame the Maize and Blue had several strong performances. In the 200-yard freestyle 2000 Olympic gold medalist Samantha Arsenault, Emily Fenn (Wesport, Conn./Staples HS) and Missy Sugar finished 1-2-3, with Arsenault's time of 1:50.26 enough for an NCAA consideration time. Arsenault also took first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.18.
Senior Jennifer Crisman won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.54 and took second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.67) at Notre Dame. She also took first in the 100-yard backstroke (56.56) and second in the 100-yard butterfly (56.16) against the Wildcats. Tealin Kelemen finished second in both the one- and three-meter diving events with zone qualifying marks of 274.12 and 324.6, respectively, against Notre Dame, then won both events at Northwestern with NCAA zone qualifying marks of 297.60 and 307.56, respectively.
