Nystrom's Four-Point Night Helps Michigan Top Miami
12/8/2001 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
OXFORD, Ohio -- Led by the forward line of junior forward Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario), junior forward Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) and freshman forward Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.), the University of Michigan ice hockey team posted a 5-2 win over the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks on Saturday (Dec. 8) for their second Central Collegiate Hockey Association road sweep of the season.
In front of a sold-out crowd at Miami's Goggin Ice Arena, Cammalleri, Ortmeyer and Nystrom combined for 10 of Michigan's 11 points, including three goals, and each had three or more points in the contest, led by Nystrom's 2-2-4. Cammalleri also had two goals in the contest, adding an assist, while Ortmeyer recorded a career-high three helpers.
The 11th-ranked Wolverines (10-5-2, 8-3-2 CCHA) blitzed the Miami defense all night long, outshooting the RedHawks by a 39-27 margin, while taking advantage of special teams' play to win their fifth straight game. Michigan also extended its unbeaten streak in league play to 7-0-1 in the last eight games, and has won or tied each of its last seven games on the road, sporting a 6-0-1 mark, including a win in each of its last four appearances.
Michigan opened the game with a 1-0 lead with 51 seconds left in the first period with junior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scoring on U-M's first power play of the night. With the Wolverines sporting a 4-on-3 advantage due to a hooking penalty on Mike Kompon, Ortmeyer fed the puck in front of the net to Nystrom for a shot that was stopped by Miami netminder David Burleigh. Shouneyia, parked to the left side of the net, took advantage of a big rebound from Nystrom's shot and flicked it in for the score.
The Wolverines made it 2-0 less than 30 seconds into the second period, with Nystrom scoring shorthanded. With sophomore Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) in the box for a high-sticking penalty at the end of the first period, senior defenseman Jay Vancik (Medina, Ohio) tried to clear the U-M zone, but the attempt was stopped by a Miami forward. Nystrom skated in, poked the puck away, and took off down the ice on a breakaway, shelving the shot over Burleigh's right shoulder to go up by two.
Miami (7-8-1, 5-6-1 CCHA) opened the final period with Jason Deskins' breakaway goal at 5:01 to pull the score within one, but the line of Nystrom, Ortmeyer and Cammalleri responded with two goals in under a minute. Nystrom tallied his second of the night at 6:56, poking in a loose puck in front of Burleigh off a shot from Cammalleri, while Cammalleri netted the first of two markers on the night, sliding the puck under Burleigh at 7:42.
The RedHawks added a power-play tally at 17:41 to pull within two, but the Wolverines slammed the door in the final minute with Cammalleri scoring the empty-net goal at 19:03.
Michigan finished the night 1-for-2 on the power play, while the RedHawks converted just one of their six opportunities. In addition, U-M posted as many shots (5) while killing penalties as Miami did with the man advantage.
Michigan will return home to close out the first half of the 2001-02 campaign, hosting Harvard in a non-conference affair on Saturday, Dec. 15. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena on the U-M campus.
