Freshmen Help Wolverines Skate to Tie with Crimson

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Playing its second overtime in three games, the University of Michigan ice hockey team closed out the first half of the 2001-02 campaign and kept its perfect December alive, skating to a 3-3 tie with Harvard on Saturday (Dec. 15) in non-conference action at Yost Ice Arena. With the stalemate, Michigan improved its record to 3-0-1 in December and extended its unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1).
Special teams were the key for the evening as the Crimson power play clicked on three of its six opportunities, including the game-tying marker by sophomore Dennis Packard with 10:11 left in the third period. Harvard scored on half its shots with the man advantage while holding the Wolverines scoreless in their three opportunities.
Hosting the Crimson for the first time in the history of the series, Michigan opened up the scoring early in the first period on sophomore David Wyzgowski's (North Street, Mich.) first goal of the season. Junior John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) sent a behind-the-back pass to Wyzgowski, who one-timed a shot from the left faceoff circle that beat Harvard goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris on his glove side.
Harvard responded with two straight goals in the first half of the second period to take a 2-1 lead, notching the first of its three power-play goals. The Crimson struck just 54 seconds into the second period to even up the score off the stick of junior Dominic Moore, who skated the puck down the left side of the ice and scored on a wrap-around between the pads of Michigan goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.). Harvard tallied another power-play goal to take the lead 9:25 into the second, when Tyler Kolarik tipped a shot by Moore in mid-air past Blackburn.
Michigan knotted the score at 2-2 just over three minutes later on a wrist shot by freshman Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.). Nystrom collected the puck on a pass from Shouneyia and sent the puck into the top shelf on Grumet-Morris' stick side.
The Wolverines regained the lead on the first collegiate goal by freshman walk-on Charlie Henderson (East Lansing, Mich.). Following a scramble deep in right corner, the puck was pushed out to Henderson at the top of the right faceoff circle. He took a wrist shot that was deflected by a Harvard player past Grumet-Morris on his stick side.
Less than three minutes later, Harvard responded with its third power-play goal of the night to even the score. Freshman Brendan Bernakevitch collected the puck deep in the Michigan zone, skated behind the net and threw it into the slot, where sophomore David McCulloch one-timed a shot that was redirected by Dennis Packard on the right side of the crease past a sprawling Blackburn.
In overtime, Michigan managed three shots while Harvard did not generate any offense.
Blackburn made 20 saves in the stalemate while Grumet-Morris stopped 35 shots as Michigan outshot the Crimson by a 38-23 margin.
The Wolverines will be idle until Friday, Dec. 28, when they face North Dakota in the semifinals of the 37th annual Great Lakes Invitational at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. Opening faceoff for the holiday classic is slated for 4:05 p.m., and the game will be televised live by FOX Sports Detroit.

Michigan was without the services of junior forward Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario), who is currently in training camp with Team Canada for the World Junior Championships, and freshman defenseman Brandon Rogers (Rochester, N.H.), who served the first game of a two-game suspension issued by the CCHA.
John Shouneyia extended his point streak to a career-high seven games with his two helpers tonight, and he has notched a point in 10 of his last 11 skates. Shouneyia has 3-9-12 during his current string and has posted 4-11-15 over the last 11 games.
Tonight's contest marked the sixth overtime game for the Wolverines this season and their second in three outings. U-M is 2-1-3 in overtime this year and is unbeaten (2-0-2) in its last four extra-stanza affairs.
Eric Nystrom has scored goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. He has 3-2-5 in his last two appearances.
Junior forward Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) picked up an assist tonight, giving him helpers in four of his last five games (0-8-8).
Freshman defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) notched a team-high +3 rating tonight, and has a +8 mark over the last three outings.
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On penalty killing ... "I think a little bit of our depth in penalty killing showed. I had to throw one or two players out there that wouldn't normally be getting much penalty killing time. We made a couple of mistakes in terms of rotation, denying the shot. There's a lot of things that go into penalty killing and that was the difference in the game. I can't tell you that power play alone killed us. They got the shots that they needed, the goals that they needed and that was obviously the difference in the game. There's an odd game when we won and found a way to win it when we were minus but we haven't been minus like this; it was just a poor job of penalty killing that cost us the chance to win the game."
On Harvard's comeback ... "They held up through the first part and they scored their first goal. They needed to get the next one, they needed to make a statement in that period and they didn't. Then the next period we came out on our heels and they had a great period."
On Michigan's fourth line ... "We had a couple of (number) four lines the way the game ended but it was good to see (David) Wyzgowski score a goal. We're going to need everyone in the GLI so it was important that Charlie Henderson scored a goal. Hopefully we're going to get goals from guys that need to score."
Freshman Forward Eric Nystrom
On making Team USA for the World Junior Championships ... "I just got a lucky break. It hurts not being able to play in the GLI, losing some guys now, but I think we have a good team to step in here, good guys that are going to jump in and hopefully produce, and I think we'll have a good shot at winning it."
On Harvard's comeback ... "College hockey is a game of momentum and they got one break and started to turn it around. They got us scrambling in our zone."
On the team's ability to score ... "All the guys on this team can put the puck in the net. Everybody has to step up. It's a team effort, not just our line or the second line. The fourth line produced and the third line produced and I think everyone is capable of scoring."
Sophomore Forward David Wyzgowski
On scoring his first goal of the season ... "It gave me a boost especially when you get it early in the game and I hadn't played in a couple of weeks so I was a little jittery at the start of the game so to get it right at the start, it helped me for the rest of the game."
