Wolverines Claim Third Place at Georgia Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team posted 175 points on the final day of competition at the Georgia Invitational on Sunday (Dec. 2) to secure a third-place finish. The Wolverines finished the meet at the Gabrielsen Natatorium with 511 points, which trailed only defending national champion Georgia (813.5) and Northwestern (611 points).
Highlighting the final day of competition for Michigan were sophomore Emily-Clare Fenn (Westport, Conn./Staples HS) and senior Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), who both posted first-place finishes. Carlberg won the 200-yard backstroke while posting an NCAA automatic qualifying time at 1:58.63, and Fenn was victorious in the 1,650-yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 16:39.43.
In the 1,650-yard freestyle, freshman Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) gave the Maize and Blue a 1-2 finish as she finished roughly four seconds behind Fenn in second place at 16:43.42, which is an NCAA consideration time.
Michigan also fared well in the 200-yard backstroke. To go along with Carlberg's victory, junior Erin Abbey (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield HS) and sophomore Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS) also posted NCAA consideration times while finishing third and fifth, respectively. Abbey finished with a time of 1:59.96 and Johnson followed at 2:01.15.
Sophomore Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS) also added an NCAA consideration time by finishing the the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:14.67, which placed her second in the event, and sophomore Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) took fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 50.65.
Michigan will have a nearly seven weeks off from competition before hosting Penn State at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Canham Natatorium.
