Third-Period Comeback Lifts Wolverines Over Bulldogs

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Two goals less than a minute apart in the final stages of the third period, including the game-winner by junior forward Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario), vaulted with University of Michigan ice hockey team to a 5-4 victory over the Ferris State Bulldogs in front of a sold-out crowd at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena on Friday night (Nov. 30).
The 13th-ranked Wolverines, who are unbeaten (4-0-1) in their last five road games, outshot the Bulldogs 37-35 while holding Ferris' high-powered power play scoreless on its four attempts, and Michigan netted five goals in the final 40 minutes, including three lamplighters in the second period.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead 12:32 into the first period of the stick of freshman Jeff Legue, who backhanded a shot past senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) on a breakaway. With Ferris trying to clear the puck out of its own zone, junior defenseman Brad Fraser (West Bloomfield, Mich.) attempted to keep it in, but fell down and created a 2-on-1 rush by Ferris State with Legue leading the way. Legue kept the puck and deked Blackburn to his stick side before drawing it back and backhanding it in at the right corner of the net.
The first half of second period featured an offensive explosion as both teams combined for four goals in a 6:35 span, resulting in a 3-2 lead for the Wovlerines. Junior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) tied the game at 1-1 3:08 into the stanza, poking a rebound from junior forward Jed Ortmeyer's (Omaha, Neb.) shot past FSU netminder Mike Brown on U-M's first power play of the night. Michigan took a 2-1 lead just under five minutes later when freshman forward Dwight Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) took a pass from Ortmeyer, split a pair of defenders, and shelved a backhanded shot past Brown.
Ferris knotted the game at 2-2 just 25 seconds later when Derek Nesbitt wristed a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. Freshman forward Michael Woodford (Westford, Mass.) tried to clear the puck, but it took a strange bounce off the half-boards and onto the stick of Nesbitt for the uncontested shot. The Wolverines responded 1:18 later to take a 3-2 advantage when Cammalleri fired a shot from the high slot that beat Brown in the upper right corner. Freshman forward Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.) was credited with the lone assist, feeding Cammalleri from the left point after he thwarted a Ferris attempt to clear the zone.
The final period of the game was just as wild as the second as four more goals were scored and the lead changed hands twice.
The Bulldogs tied the game 12:21 into the third when Nesbitt found himself all alone in front of the net to poke the puck past Blackburn, then took a 4-3 lead 49 seconds later when Matt York fired a shot along the goal line on the right side that deflected off Blackburn and into the back of the net.
Michigan responded with two goals in a span of 53 seconds to regain the lead. Sophomore defenseman Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) evened the contest at 17:32 on a shot from the right point before Cammalleri netted the game-winner at 18:19, scoring on a blast from the top of the slot that beat Brown on his glove side. Helminen was credited with an assist on both goals and finished with a season-high three points.
Blackburn made 31 stops in net to extend his winning streak against Ferris State to three games, while Brown halted 32 of the Wolverines' 37 attempts to score.
Both teams venture to Ann Arbor to close out the series on Saturday (Dec. 1), with opening faceoff slated for 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
