Michigan Falls to Offensive Outburst at No. 8 Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- On a cold and blustery afternoon in Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan women's soccer team had its four-match shutout victory streak come to an end Sunday (Oct. 7) at Penn State as the Wolverines fell 6-2 to the No. 8-ranked Nittany Lions at Jeffrey Field.
Penn State's Christie Welsh, who ended the game with 10 points on four goals and two assists, opened the scoring at 33:10 when she flicked a Heidi Drummond pass into the net past Michigan goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) for a 1-0 Nittany Lion lead, ending Grech's and Michigan's shutout streak at 403:41 minutes. One minute later Welsh scored her second of three goals when she sent a Bonnie Young pass to the back of the net, giving Penn State a 2-0 lead.
Wolverine junior Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) put Michigan on the board at 34:56 when she pounded in a loose ball following a corner kick. The goal was unassisted and was her third goal of the year. After the quick three goals in less than three minutes no more scoring occurred in the first half and the two teams left the field with the score 2-1 Penn State.
Another flurry of goals came in the second half when three were scored in only one minute. At 52:42 Penn State's Stephanie Smith sent a high ball past Grech from the left side to push PSU's lead to 3-1. Forty-three seconds later Welsh netted her third goal of the match to give the Nittany Lions a 4-1 lead.
Just seconds after that Michele Pesiri (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) scored her first goal of the season, cutting the lead to 4-2. It was Pesiri's fourth career goal in three years of action. Heidi Drummond and Welsh each added late goals to close out the scoring.
The Wolverines (6-5, 4-2 Big Ten) return to action Friday (Oct. 12) as they take on Big Ten Conference opponent Indiana at 4 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.
