MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team continued its solid defensive play Friday (Oct. 26), holding Florida International to just four shots on goal. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, two of the shots got by Michigan goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and the Wolverines fell 2-1 at University Park in their first match at the FIU Invitational.
The Golden Panthers opened the scoring at 34:59 when midfielder Conor Collins sent an Emanuel Hendrix forward pass past Zawacki for his first goal of the season. The 1-0 lead would not hold up long, however, as nearly five minutes later the U-M freshman connection of Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) knotted the match at 1-1 when Turpin headed home a Cameron crossing pass from five yards out.
The second half was much more physical as the two teams combined for 27 fouls and only three shots on net. The Maize and Blue had two opportunities, but new goalkeeper Wally Crittenden turned away both shots.
The Golden Panthers had but one scoring chance in the second frame and they made good on it. In the 61st minute Conner scored his second goal, finding the upper right corner from five yards out off a John Pulido cross. The goal gave FIU a 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
The Wolverines (8-5-1) will look to rebound against Furman University as they play their final match of the Florida International Invitational on Sunday (Oct. 28, noon) at University Park.
