This Week
The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team will head to the East Coast to take on two teams from the Ivy League. On Friday (Oct. 26), the Wolverines will take on Harvard at 5 p.m. at Blodgett Pool in Boston, Mass., before traveling to Providence, R.I., for a noon start on Saturday (Oct. 27) against Brown at the Smith Swim Center.
First Things First
When Michigan squares off against Harvard and Brown this weekend, it will mark the first time it has faced either school in a dual meet. In fact, the only Ivy League school that the Wolverines have faced in a dual meet is Princeton, with the last meeting coming in the 1992-93 season.
Scouting Harvard
Harvard will open its dual meet season on Friday with the addition of 14 freshmen to a roster that posted a 3-4 record last year. All seven meets last year occurred in the Ivy League en route to a fourth-place finish at the Ivy League Championships. Senior Rebekah Lorenz will anchor the team in the freestyle events this season as she owns top-10 times in school history for the 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyles. The co-captains for Harvard are seniors Catherine Lee and Janna McDougall, who will carry the load in the sprints as she owns the second fastest time in school history for the 100-yard freestyle.
Scouting Brown
The Bears are entering the first season under head coach Peter Brown, who left Penn State after a 17-year run as head coach of the Nittany Lions. Coach Brown inherits a talented roster that features 10 different swimmers who combined for 12 Ivy League first- or second-team selections last season. The Bears earned all four Ivy League honors in the individual medley events with sophomore Lindsay Hoban, senior Judy Koonstra, junior Bates Gregory and senior Katherine Mattison. Brown also returns two swimmers who captured multiple Ivy League honors in senior Dawn Chuck (first-team in the 200-yard freestyle and second-team in the 100-yard freestyle) and sophomore Jean Lee (first-team selection in the 1,650-yard freestyle and a second-team selection in the 500-yard freestyle).
Welcome Addition
When sophomore Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS) decided to transfer to Michigan from the University of Kentucky, head coach Jim Richardson knew he was getting a good swimmer. What Richardson may not have anticipated was Stein winning both individual events in which she competed in against Florida (Oct. 19). In the 100-yard breaststroke Stein posted a first-place finish with a time of 1:04.72 and then backed that up by winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.00.
Good Luck Charm
Last year sophomore Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) earned four NCAA All-America Honorable Mention awards, with all four occurring in relay events. She picked up right where she left off on Saturday (Oct. 20) at the Florida Relays by competing on all three relay teams that were victorious. The relays that Michigan won were the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.31), the 200-yard breaststroke relay (2:02.91) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.29). The day before in a dual meet against Florida, Weilbacher swam the first leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay that had a first-place performance with a time of 3:28.40.
No Back Problems
Despite the loss to graduation of Jennifer Crisman (1997-2001), who won four consecutive Big Ten Championships in the 200-yard backstroke, the Wolverines still have a strong presence in the backstroke categories. Against Florida, senior Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.82 and reeled in a second-place performance in the 100-yard backstroke (57.52).
Sweeping Success
Sophomore Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) is helping add to Michigan's point totals by taking care of business on the diving boards. Kelemen helped the U-M cause against Florida by sweeping both the one- and three-meter springboard events. Kelemen posted a score of 254.35 on the one-meter and then outdid the next closest competitor on the three-meter by nearly 16 points with her tally of 256.35.
