Michigan Among Fastest Crews at Head of the Charles

BOSTON -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team took part in the annual Head of the Charles today (Sunday, Oct. 21) and finished among the top 10 in the two events it entered boats. The varsity eight placed sixth in the Championship Eight race for women with a time of 16:37.929, the third best time among collegiate entries. The varsity four was fourth overall and the fastest collegiate boat in the Championship Four race for women with time of 18:44.460.
Michigan alumna Kate Johnson (1998-2001) stroked the United States National Team to a victory in the Championship Eight race with a time of 16:01.690. Princeton, last year's winner of the event, was second with a time of 16:10.840. The Canadian National Team, rowing under the name London Training Center, was third. Ohio State and Yale were fourth and fifth, respectively. Michigan's time of 16:37.929 was good for sixth out of 53 entries in the race.
The Wolverines' four, which featured four members from last year's national championship second varsity eight boat, was the fastest collegiate boat to finish the three-mile course, in 18:44.460. Germany finished with a time of 18:22.859 to take first in the Championship Four race. The United States National Team and the Danish Rowing Federation were second and third, respectively.
The Wolverines' varsity squad finishes the fall season next Sunday (Oct. 28) at the Head of the Elk in Elkhart, Ind.
