McCain Earns Clincher as Michigan Edges DePaul

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team remained unbeaten during the dual match season, posting a 4-3 victory over DePaul today (Sunday, Jan. 28) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (3-0) won the doubles points and captured three singles matches to earn the victory.
The match as No. 2 singles decided things, with junior Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) netting a come-from-behind, three-set victory. McCain dropped the first set and was down 4-0 and 5-2 in the second set before rallying to win the second in a tie-breaker (7-2). He completed the comeback, winning the match 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-3.
For the second straight day, Michigan started the match by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Junior co-captain Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and sophomore Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) posted an 8-5 win at the top spot over Robert Kurek and Maciek Joswiak to gain the Wolverines' first doubles victory. Freshmen Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and Brett Baudinet (Auckland, New Zealand/King's College) secured the team point with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 over Dan Bennett and Neil Johnston. DePaul earned a 9-7 win at No. 2 as Jevgenij Cariov and Sanjay Jeram beat McCain and fellow junior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS).
In addition to McCain's match-clinching singles win, the Wolverines received victories from Jackson and Shaya. Jackson posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Andy Michael at No. 4 and Shaya won in three sets against Dan Bennett at No. 5 (6-0, 3-6, 6-0).
Michigan returns to action next Sunday (Feb. 4) against Louisiana-Lafayette at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match begins at 10:30 a.m., with the U-M women's squad facing DePaul immediately following.
