Wolverines Drop Home Opener to Washington

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team lost its 2000 home opener, falling 4-0 to the University of Washington on Friday (Sept 8) on the opening day of the Michigan Nike Invitational. In the first game of the invitational, Ohio State defeated Missouri 3-2 in overtime.
Caroline Putz opened the scoring for the Huskies with 5:39 gone in the first half. Michigan held off the Huskies the rest of the first half, while managing some chances of their own. Sophomore Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) had two of Michigan's best scoring opportunities late in the first half.
Washington exploded offensively in the second half, scoring three goals in 10 minutes on 18 shots. Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS), U-M's leading scorer last season, had the Wolverines only shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) made six saves and allowed four goals.
The Wolverines face the Missouri Tigers on Sunday (Sept. 10) in the final game of the Michigan Nike Invitational at 2:30 p.m., following the noon match between Ohio State and Washington.
