Four Wolverines Score in Shutout of Golden Gophers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) earned her third consecutive shutout as the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team blasted Minnesota 4-0 on Sunday (Sept. 24) at U-M Soccer Field.
The Wolverines opened the scoring at 12:59 of the first half as senior Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) scored her first goal of the season. Scoring the second goal of the game was freshman Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) with her third goal of the season. Chavez took the ball from a Minnesota defender and beat goaltender Julie Eibensteiner to the left-hand corner of the net at 28:22 of the first half.
Minnesota challenged Michigan in the second half, tallying 13 shots but not converting any. Michigan's leading scorer, Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) added to the Wolverine lead with her tally at 71:33 of the second half. Crumpton blasted a pass from Chavez for her fourth goal of the season. The Wolverine offense continued to roll with junior Abby Tompkins (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett HS) scoring the final goal of the game off a long pass from defender Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) at 87:35.
Grech held the Golden Gophers scoreless, making 12 saves on the afternoon. With the win, Grech now has a 3-1-0 record with three shutouts this season.
Michigan continues Big Ten action next weekend when it travels to Iowa (Sept. 29) and Illinois (Oct. 1).

• Goalkeeper Suzie Grech made 12 saves to earn her third victory of her rookie season. All of Grech's wins have been shutouts.
• Senior Kacy Beitel registered her first goal of the season, raising her 2000 point total to five (1-3-5). Beitel was U-M's leading scorer last season with 34 points.
• Sophomore Abby Crumpton scored her fourth goal of the season and now leads the Wolverine offense this season with 10 points (4-2-10).
