Wolverines Prevail Against Schoolcraft in Rain and Mud

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Michigan men's soccer team took on Schoolcraft College and Mother Nature today (Sunday, Sept. 10) and beat them both. The Wolverines prevailed in the rain with a 2-0 exhibition victory.
A light rain came down at the start of the match, but it did not stop the Michigan offense. As the aggressors from the start, the Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead on freshman Ian Hirschfield's (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest HS) penalty kick at 14:30. Michigan maintained the 1-0 lead at halftime. Halfway through the period, play was stopped to discuss playing conditions but continued after a brief meeting between coaches and the head official.
As the downpour continued into the second half, the field turned play into a hydroplaning experience. Despite the conditions, a Michigan offensive charge late in the game led to a breakaway by freshman Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS) on a long pass from sophomore Matt Murch (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Northern HS). Robinson scored from 10 yards out to extend Michigan's lead to 2-0 at the 64:30 mark.
Making the start in goal for the Maize and Blue was junior Pat Murphy (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles HS), who shut out Schoolcraft with six saves on the afternoon.
Michigan looks for better weather when it matches up against Illinois-Chicago on Thursday (Sept. 14) at 7:30 p.m. on Elbel Field.

Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "It wasn't a soccer game, it was a mud bowl. It was nice because we have a couple of muckers on our team. It's tough to talk about anything tactically because of the mud. You do what you need to do to try and get some goals. Defensively, I thought we were strong enough to hold them off."
