U-M Opens Busy Week with Two Shutouts of EMU

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 13-ranked Michigan softball showed little effects of a four-day schedule break, handing cross-county rival Eastern Michigan a non-conference doubleheader loss, 4-0 and 8-0 (5 innings), in Tuesday (May 2) at Alumni Field.
Michigan (38-11-1) relied on a trio of four-run innings to upend Eastern Michigan (19-25). In game one, the teams played scoreless ball through four and one-half innings before U-M unleashed four runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth. The Wolverines opened the nightcap with four runs in the first inning and eliminated the Eagles by the eight-run rule with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) enjoyed a solid hitting day, leading the Wolverines with three hits, including a triple to rightfield in game two. Kollen singled to third base and scored on Chrissy Garza's (Southgate, Mich./Anderson HS) double down the rightfield line to begin Michigan's fifth-inning run parade in the opener. Kollen's triple in the fifth inning of the second game scored two of the Wolverines' four runs. Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in game two, and powered a season-first triple past EMU rightfielder Crystal Thompson in the second inning.
Wolverine coach Carol Hutchins worked three pitchers in the doubleheader. Marie Barda (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South HS) won the opener to improve to 15-5, allowing one hit and a walk over five innings. Jamie Gillies (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) threw the last two innings of game one and the first three innings of game two, giving up three hits and a walk while taking the nightcap victory (8-3). Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) tossed two innings in relief of Gillies in game two. Aimee Hamilton (8-8) and Corey Repicky (2-6) took the losses for Eastern Michigan.
Michigan closes the home portion of its regular-season schedule with Wednesday's (May 3) 2 p.m. doubleheader vs. Ohio University.
Maize 'n Blue Diamond Gems
The four-member Wolverine senior class recorded a pair of milestones in the Eastern Michigan doubleheader. The class won the 200th game of their careers in game one and played in their 250th Michigan game in game two. Jamie Gillies, Melissa Gentile (O'Fallon, Mo./Wentzville HS), Pam Kosanke (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central HS) and Karmen Lappo (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) carry a 201-46-3 (.810) record over their four seasons.
Game one of the Eastern Michigan twinbill marked the 350th Wolverine game at Alumni Field. U-M carries a 259-92 (.738) on its present-day home field. . . . Michigan goes to 33-8 all-time against Eastern Michigan, extending its win streak to nine games. . . . The Wolverines are 7-1 vs. Mid-American Conference teams this season, with five wins by shutout.
