VICTORIA, Texas -- The University of Michigan men's golf team started off the 2000 NCAA Central Regional Championship by carding a first-round team total of 297 in the hot, windy conditions at the Victoria Country Club on Thursday (May 18). The Wolverines sit in a tie for 13th place with North Texas after the first round of the 54-hole tournament.
Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) fired a team-best 72 to lead the Wolverines. Senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) followed with a 73 and junior/sophomore Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) carded a 74 to round out the top three.
Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS) fired a first-round 78, while senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) rounded out the Michigan five-man squad with a 79.
"We did a nice job overall considering the windy conditions," said U-M head coach Jim Carras. "Scott (Hayes) played strong all the way through the first round, which I was happy to see. Michael (Harris) again was solid, while Kyle (Kilcherman) was a pleasant surprise with his 74. Again, we need to have our fourth and fifth guys come through for us. We have an early day tomorrow, so hopefully we can make our move. I am guardedly optimistic about our chances because we are right in the thick of things."
Houston and Southern Methodist are tied for the team lead with a score of 285. Chris Chesson of Louisiana-Lafayette along with Luke Donald of Northwestern, Matt Lindholm of Texas A&M and Karl Hansen of SMU head up the leaderboard. Chesson shot a first-round best of 68, while Donald, Lindholm and Hansen were only a stroke behind with 69s.
Michigan will continue at the NCAA Central Regional Championship on Friday (May 19) with the 18-hole second round that is scheduled to begin for the Wolverines at 7:12 a.m. CDT. Kilcherman will be first off the 10th tee for U-M, followed by Matthews (7:21), Affeldt (7:30), Hayes (7:39) and Harris (7:48).
