Michigan Pounds Purdue in Big Ten Quarterfinal Match

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team disposed of No. 4 seeded Purdue 4-1 on Friday morning (April 28) at the 2000 Big Ten Championship held at Indiana University. The Wolverines, seeded fifth in the 11-team event, advanced to Saturday morning's semifinal to face the winner of Friday's quarterfinal between No. 1 seed Illinois and No. 9 Michigan State.

Michigan (15-5) claimed an extremely close doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, while Purdue claimed an 8-3 victory by Jason Marshall and Andrew Wakefield over senior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) at No. 2. Senior co-captain John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and freshman Zach Held (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) posted an impressive 8-4 win over Carl McCafferty and Derek Miller at No. 2. The doubles point came down to a tie-break at No. 3, with sophomore Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) and senior co-captain Brad McFarlane (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge Secondary HS) prevailing 8-6 in the tie-break for a 9-8 match score.

The Wolverines made quick work of things in singles with all three victories coming in straight sets. In a matchup of two of the nation's top singles players, No. 64-ranked Wright posted a dominating 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 35-ranked Jason Marshall at the No. 1 spot (rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association). Beam disposed of Purdue's McCafferty 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 and sophomore Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) tallied a 6-3, 7-5 win over Scott Mayer at No. 5. The Boilermakers registered their only point of the match as Wakefield received a win as the Wolverines' McCain retired at No. 4. The remaining two matches were abandoned as Michigan tallied the required points needed for victory.
