EVANSTON, Ill. -- Erin Jancic's solo home run in the third inning was all Northwestern University needed to upend Big Ten Conference leader University of Michigan 1-0 Saturday afternoon (April 22) at Anderson Field. The loss dropped the 11th-ranked Wolverines (34-10-1, 11-3 Big Ten) into a race with the University of Iowa for the top spot in the conference standings (Iowa plays Michigan State in a 6 p.m. single game Saturday).

Michigan had its chances to score, stranding runners at third base in the first, third and sixth innings. Twice Northwestern forced the third U-M out on groundouts, and ended the sixth striking out Wolverine pitcher Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) on a 1-2 count. Young (13-2), who struck out seven Northwestern batters, gave up three hits and a walk in the losing effort and had her personal 11-game winning streak snapped.

The Wolverine bats fell silent for the second straight game as NU pitcher Brie Brown (7-9) tossed a two-hitter with four strikeouts. Michigan was held to just one hit in its 5-0 loss at Iowa on Friday (April 21). Melissa Taylor (Petersburg, Mich./Summerfield HS) and Chrissy Garza (Southgate, Mich./Anderson HS) had the two U-M hits, both singles.

Michigan closes its two-game series vs. Northwestern with noon CDT single game Sunday in Evanston, Ill.
