Michigan completes the regular season and Big Ten dual match slate with a trip east to face Ohio State and Penn State. The Wolverines travel to Columbus for a Saturday (April 22, 1 p.m.) match against the Buckeyes at the Stickney Tennis Center. Michigan heads to Penn State for an Easter Day contest (Sunday, April 23, noon) with the Nittany Lions at the Sarni Tennis Center.
Michigan Against Ohio State
The Wolverines and Buckeyes will be meeting for the 86th time on the hardcourt when they play Saturday (April 22) in Columbus. Michigan holds a commanding 70-13-2 advantage in the all-time series and has won seven straight against Ohio State (last loss was a 4-2 match at the 1993 Big Ten Championships). The Wolverines defeated the Buckeyes 6-1 last year at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Wolverines and Nittany Lions
Sunday's (April 23) match will be the 13th meeting between the two programs, with Michigan holding an 11-1 advantage in the all-time series. In a recent series started with PSU's joining the Big Ten Conference, Michigan holds a 9-1 edge (the two schools did play a match during both the 1923-24 and 1924-25 seasons, with the Wolverines winning both). The Wolverines have a 5-1 record all-time in State College, Pa., with the only setback coming 4-3 during the 1992-93 season. U-M defeated Penn State 6-1 last year at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Wolverines Post 3-0 Week
The men's tennis squad completed last week's action with a 3-0 record, beating a trio of regional opponents to raise its regional record to 8-4 this season. Michigan came back after losing the doubles point to defeat Notre Dame (5-2) on Thursday, and posted 6-1 victories over the weekend against Big Ten foes Iowa and Wisconsin. The Wolverines improved to 12-5 on the year with the wins and evened their conference record at 4-4 heading into the final weekend of action.
Michigan Falls to 26th in Team Rankings
After listing in the top 25 for four consecutive weeks, the Michigan men's tennis team dropped to No. 26 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released on Wednesday, April 12. The Wolverines had been ranked the previous four weeks after not being listed among the nation's top 25 for more than three years (October 26, 1996 preseason ITA rankings). Michigan peaked at a season-high No. 18 in the polls on March 22.
