TAMPA, Fla. -- A split in Sunday's (Feb. 27) last two USF/Gladstone's Tournament games -- a 2-1, 10-inning loss to No. 22 South Carolina and a 4-0 shutout of Indiana -- gave No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball a 3-2 record over the three-day tournament in Tampa, Fla.
In Sunday's first game, Michigan (6-4) scored in the top of the fifth when Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) came home on the Gamecocks' error on Kelsey Kollen's (Cerritos, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) infield hit. South Carolina made the most of its two hits, scoring both of its runs off the singles. USC tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a rightfield single, then scored the game-winning run on a shallow infield hit that fell between first and second base.
Kollen and Moulden each recorded two hits in the eight-hit Michigan offensive effort. Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) posted her first loss of the season (3-1) in the nine and one-third innings complete-game effort. Megan Matthews was the winner.
Michigan and Indiana played through four and one-half scoreless innings before the Wolverines ended the deadlock with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth. Moulden's double in the fifth produced the first U-M run. Pam Kosanke (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central HS) drilled a two-run single, followed by a run-scoring single by Karmen Lappo (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) in the three-run sixth.
Marie Barda (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South HS) picked up the win in relief of starter Jamie Gillies (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS). Barda (2-2) gave up no hits over her three innings of work to share the two-hit shutout with Gillies. Teresa Martinez took the loss for the Hoosiers.
The Wolverines continue spring break play with a Tuesday (Feb. 29) twilight doubleheader at South Florida (5 p.m.).
