POWAY, Calif. -- Michigan softball ended its run in the Campbell/Cartier Classic with a 2-1 loss to No. 15 Long Beach State late Saturday (Feb. 19) and a rain cancellation of Sunday's scheduled game vs. Sacramento State.

For the second straight game, the sixth-ranked Wolverines (3-2) produced offense but were unable to convert those hits into scores, out-hitting Long Beach State 7-4. Lack of defense also proved fatal to Michigan, with the Wolverines committing a season-high three errors.

Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Pam Kosanke (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central HS) drove in Melissa Gentile (O'Fallon, Mo./Wentzville HS) from second base with a single. LBSU came back and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a two-error play to centerfield. Michigan pitcher Jamie Gillies (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) gave up a solo home run to Jessica Smith in the bottom of the sixth for the 49ers' game-winning score.

Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) collected a pair of singles in three at-bats to lead the Michigan offense.

The Wolverines return to action at the Gladstone's Tournament in Tampa, Fla., beginning Friday (Feb. 25) with games against Auburn (4 p.m.) and Kent (8 p.m.).

Maize 'n Blue Diamond Gems

Long Beach State extended its series lead vs. Michigan to 4-2 with its second consecutive win vs. the Wolverines. The last three meetings between the two teams have all been at the Campbell/Cartier Classic.
