Guyton, Indiana Race Past Michigan, 86-65

For the 11th time this season Michigan (12-9, 3-7 Big Ten) was led by freshman LaVell Blanchard (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), who netted 21 points, his seventh 20-plus point performance this season. Blanchard completed his seventh double-double by grabbing a game-high 12 boards, the 15th time he's led the team in rebounding. Sophomore Chris Young (Plymouth, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central HS), making his first career start, responded with a career-high 12 points to go along with six rebounds, his second-highest career effort, while Pete Vignier (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck HS) came off the bench to hit all four of his field goal attempts for eight points.
The Hoosiers (18-4, 8-3 Big Ten) received great efforts from their post players, with 19 points and six rebounds from Kirk Haston, 13 points -- on 4-of-6 shooting -- and seven boards from Lynn Washington, and five points and a career-high nine rebounds from Jeffrey Newton.
Indiana opened the game with eight points before Blanchard buried a three-pointer for Michigan's first points of the game. The five-point deficit (8-3) would be as close as the game would get as the Hoosiers continued on a 6-2 run to build their lead to 14-5. The Wolverines made one last run as Vignier entered the game and scored six points on 3-of-3 shooting to spark an 11-6 Michigan spurt which again closed the game to five points, 20-15. However, Indiana regained control and built its lead to as high as 17 (42-25) before entering the half up 44-28.
The Wolverines started the second half with their big lineup, playing two post players and Blanchard on the wing and cut into the Hoosier lead as Blanchard hit a pair of jumpers and Young converted a pair of traditional three-point plays with put-backs and free throws to bring the score to 51-39. Kevin Gaines (Las Vegas, Nev./Clark HS) appeared to draw Michigan even closer when he drove the lane and converted a layup, but he was called for a controversial charging violation to negate the hoop.
Guyton then responded by drilling a three to end the Michigan run and start an 8-0 Indiana streak to extend the Hoosier lead to 59-39. The Wolverines never brought the margin within 14 points the remainder of the way as the Hoosiers ended the game on a 10-4 streak for an 86-65 final score.
Michigan returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 16) when it travels to Madison, Wis., for an 7 p.m. CST tip-off against the Wisconsin Badgers.
