Three-Point Barrage Leads Wisconsin Past Michigan

Freshman guard Kevin Gaines (Las Vegas, Nev./Clark HS) did all that he could for the Wolverines as he snapped out of his offensive slump with a team-leading 16 points. He also finished with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. The game also marked the fifth straight game Gaines has played 35 or more minutes as he logged 38 against the Badgers.
Sophomore Leon Jones (Battle Creek, Mich./Winchendon Prep) was strong from the outside as he finished the night 3-for-4 from deep for 10 points in the game. Junior Brandon Smith (Amarillo, Texas, Palo Duro HS) chipped in 11 points before fouling out with six minutes to go.
With the Michigan game plan to go down to the post, senior Peter Vignier (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck HS) made his first start of the season in the post along with sophomore Chris Young (Plymouth, Mich./Catholic Central HS), who made his second career start. But it was the barrage of three-pointers by Wisconsin that changed the inside game to the outside. Wisconsin guard Duany Duany, who tied a Big Ten record by hitting all five of his three-pointers, and Roy Boone each had 17 points to lead the Badgers as the two combined for 9-of-10 from the outside in the game.
Duany scored nine of Wisconsin's first 13 points as the Badgers' outside shooting kept the Wolverines in check. With the score 20-15 in the first half, the Badgers pulled away with an 11-2 run behind three-pointers by Boone and Jon Bryant. The Badgers hit 10 straight three-pointers to lead 47-33 at the half, their season-best scoring output for a half.
In the second period, the Wolverines could not close the gap as they continued to use the inside game to try and open the outside game, but the Badgers continued to hold the lead with an inside game of their own as they held on to a 15-point lead. A Jones three-pointer cut the lead to 12, but Wisconsin used another 9-1 run to go up by 20 points, 66-46 with 9:30 remaining. The lead would grow to as many as 22, but late free throws helped finish the game for the Wolverines with a 16-point loss, 75-59.
Michigan, which returns home for two games, will try to snap the losing streak against Penn State Saturday (Feb. 19). Tipoff is scheduled for 12:17 p.m.
