Michigan Edges No. 26 Washington to Win Shootout

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis squad won a tight 4-3 match against No. 26-ranked Washington Saturday afternoon (Feb. 12) to win the Great Northwest Shootout, held at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. The No. 32-ranked Wolverines (4-0) won the doubles point and split the six singles matches with the Huskies to remain unbeaten on the year.

Michigan grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the match, claiming wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots. Senior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and sophomore Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) claimed an 8-5 victory over Nick Quatrochi and Ari Strasberg at the No. 1 spot. Senior Ron Nano (Great Neck, N.Y./South HS) and sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) teamed for the first time this year to collect an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot, beating Washington's Matt Hanlin and Mark Woolley.

Trailing 1-0 in the match, Washington put the pressure on Michigan during singles play by winning straight-set matches at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 spots to take a 3-1 lead. The Wolverines persevered and claimed the victory with three-set victories at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 spots. Wright won his team-leading 16th match of the year, beating Hanlin at the No. 1 spot (6-4, 6-7, 6-2). Senior co-captain John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) dropped the opening set in his match at the No. 2 spot but responded to win in three sets over Andy Posavac (4-6, 6-2, 7-5). Beam claimed the Wolverines' final victory with a three-set win over Jeremy Berman at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 4-6, 6-2).

Michigan returns to the Varsity Tennis Center Friday evening (Feb. 18) to face cross-town rival Eastern Michigan, beginning at 4 p.m. The Wolverines have an 18-2 record all-time against the Eagles.
