Wolverines Dominate Central Michigan in 37-0 Shutout

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A complete destructive effort by the eighth-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team led to a 37-0 shutout of Central Michigan on Saturday (Dec. 9) at Cliff Keen Arena. The blanking marked the first time the Wolverines have swept all 10 matchups in a dual meet since the 1998-99 season when they defeated George Mason, 46-(-1).
The Maize and Blue came out firing, earning four straight major-decision victories to begin the contest and gain a 16-0 advantage. In the stretch, sophomore A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) -- ranked sixth at 125 pounds -- avenged a earlier season loss to CMU senior Ahmad Sanders with a 16-6 major decision to take his record to 15-3 on the season.
After consecutive U-M victories took the score to 19-0, redshirt freshman Pat Owen (Polson, Mont./Polson HS) recorded his first win by fall in dual-meet competition, at 1:20 over Chippewa Jonathan Reed. Michigan coasted with three more wins and finished the dual at 37-0.
Michigan will take a month off before getting back on the mat. A month of road competition in January will begin when the Wolverines take on seventh-ranked Lehigh (Jan. 5, 2001) in Bethlehem, Pa., and No. 17 Pennsylvania (Jan. 7, 2001) in Philadelphia, Pa.
