ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 1-ranked Michigan ice hockey team suffered its first defeat of the season Saturday night (Nov. 4), falling 1-0 to No. 6 Michigan State in front of 6,521 fans at Yost Ice Arena.
Rustyn Dolyny's power-play goal at the 17:00 mark of the first period proved to be the game-winner. With Andy Burnes (Battle Creek, Mich.) serving a minor penalty for obstruction, Dolyny took a shot from between the blue line and left circle and beat Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) to put the Spartans ahead 1-0.
Michigan State (4-2-1, 3-2-0 CCHA) finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play, while Michigan was unable to convert on four power-play opportunities. Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) saw his three-game scoring streak come to a close. Hilbert had registered nine points (2-7-9) in his last three games, one against Bowling Green and two vs. Miami (Ohio).
Michigan (6-1-2, 4-1-0 CCHA) outshot the Spartans 31-13 during the game but was unable to solve MSU goalie Ryan Miller. Miller finished the game with 31 saves and improved his record to 5-1-1. Blackburn stopped 12 Spartan shots before being pulled in favor of the extra attacker with 1:06 remaining in the game.
The Wolverines will play Ferris State next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 10-11) in a home-and-home series. U-M hosts the Bulldogs Friday at Yost Ice Arena starting at 7:35 p.m. before traveling to Ewigleben Ice Arena to take on the Bulldogs at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Big Rapids, Mich.

-- The loss marked the first time since December 9, 1988, that the Wolverines have suffered a shutout loss to the Spartans. Michigan was held scoreless in Yost Ice Arena for the first time since November 19, 1999, when the Wolverines suffered a 3-0 loss to Lake Superior State.
-- Saturday's game featured the second annual Maize Out sponsored by Bank One. Fans were encouraged to wear maize in support of the Wolverines, and the first 1,000 fans at Yost Ice Arena received a free maize shirt compliments of Bank One. Michigan tied Ohio State 1-1 during last year's inaugural Maize Out on January 29, 2000.

Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the team's performance ... "It's a disappointing loss, obviously. It was a home game against an archrival with a great crowd. I can't fault our effort or execution. I thought our team played hard and played well. They played together. We did a good job on the penalty kill, and I thought our team played a really good game."
On the shutout ... "You don't expect a 1-0 game, you expect a one-goal game. Obviously, it was a goalies' game. (MSU goaltender Ryan) Miller had a great game. I can't ask any more of our team. I thought we played as well as we could play. It was one of those nights when the puck just wasn't going in. I liked the way our team played."
On the loss ... "It's disappointing to lose that game, but it's not the end of the season. We have three more games against the same team, and they will all be good games."
