ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The third-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated Ferris State 4-1 tonight (Friday, Nov. 10) in front of 6,517 fans at Yost Ice Arena. U-M benefited from a balanced attack which saw eight Wolverines record points during the contest, including four different goal scorers. Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) and Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Wolverines.
Matzka's third goal of the season put the Wolverines ahead 1-0 with 5:05 left in the first period. John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) fed Matzka a pass at center ice before he skated up the left boards and around Bulldog defenseman Martin Sellgren and took a shot from inside the left circle that beat Bulldog netminder Vince Owen's glove hand.
Michigan (7-1-2, 5-1-0 CCHA) took a 2-0 lead early in the second period on a power-play goal from Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario). With the Bulldogs in the middle of a line change, Wolverine goalie Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) fired a pass from the crease to Cammalleri at the Bulldog blue line, and he skated in alone and slid the puck through Owen's five-hole. Blackburn's assist was his second of the season, and seventh of his career.
Murray scored his first goal of the season with 8:03 left in the second period to extend the Michigan lead to 3-0. Murray's initial shot from the right circle was stopped by Owen, but during a wild scramble in front of the Ferris State goal Murray was able to slap the loose puck into the net. Joe Kautz (Des Plaines, Ill.) picked up the assist on Murray's goal, giving the freshman his first career point as a Wolverine.
Ferris State (2-5-2, 0-4-1 CCHA) cut the Michigan lead to 3-1 midway through the third period on a power-play goal from Chris Kunitz. Rob Collins fed Kunitz a pass in the right circle and his shot along the ice beat Blackburn to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard.
Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) capped the scoring at the 11:49 mark of the third period with a power-play goal. Matzka sent a pass from the left boards to Murray at the right post where his shot was stopped by Owen, but Koch tipped in the rebound to give the Wolverines a 4-1 cushion.
Blackburn finished the game with 14 saves and improved his record to 6-1-2 on the season. Owen stopped 28 Wolverine shots and suffered the loss, dropping his record to 2-5-2.
The game was broken up in the third period when a fight started after Cammalleri was cross-checked in the Ferris State crease. After several scuffles were sorted out, both Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) and Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) received game disqualification penalties and will not be eligible for Saturday's (Nov. 11) rematch in Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris State's Chad McIver and Jim Dube received the same penalties and will not play tomorrow.
Associate head coach Mel Pearson was behind the bench for the Wolverines. Head coach Red Berenson was participating in a ceremony at the Hockey Hall of Fame honoring the 1972 Canadian team which faced the Soviet Union in the historic Summit Series.
U-M and Ferris State will finish both the weekend and season series Saturday (Nov. 11) at 7:05 p.m. at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

Q U O T E S
Associate Head Coach Mel Pearson
On the game ... "I thought the team played hard, especially in the first two periods. The third period became penalty-filled, and then it becomes hard to concentrate. When guys are playing on the penalty kill and power play all the time, they get tired quickly. It's nice to see a guy like (Craig) Murray chip in tonight. Overall, I was happy with the game."
On coaching the game ... "I enjoyed it. I hope to be a head coach someday, and tonight was a little taste of what it's like. It's tough being a head coach, and there is a lot of pressure in games early in the season. I tried not to make it a big deal. We needed to just go out a play like we did before."
On the fighting ... "I was hoping no one would get thrown out. (Dave) Huntzicker was trying to get out of it. We've had run-ins with Ferris State before, but I don't know why. We certainly don't condone fighting, and it was unfortunate that it happened. This will be a chance to get some other guys in the lineup. I really don't think it will carry over to tomorrow night."
Senior Captain Geoff Koch
On scoring a goal ... "I was pressing all night. I was getting a little frustrated. It was nice to finally put one in. It was good to get back in the flow. It was great to play with Mike (Cammalleri) and Jed (Ortmeyer). We all had a good game, and it was fun."
