Four-Goal Cushion Saves Ferris from U-M Comeback

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- In an all-around mess of a game, the University of Michigan ice hockey team dropped its second game of the season in a 5-4 loss to Ferris State on Saturday (Nov. 11) in front of 2,450 fans at Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Wolverines fell behind 5-1 midway through the second period before mounting a comeback that fell one goal short.
Offensively for the Wolverines, Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) scored his second goal of the weekend and Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) scored twice for his second two-goal game of the season. In a repeat of Friday night's (Nov. 10) game in Ann Arbor, the teams combined for over 120 penalty minutes for the second consecutive game, including a beach-clearing brawl at the end of the contest.
Michigan started slow, giving up a short-handed goal just 3:48 into the contest. The team then found itself in the middle of a scuffle after FSU's Phil Lewandowski charged into Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) while Blackburn was trying to play the puck behind the net. Immediately, Bob Gassoff (St. Louis, Mo.) defended Blackburn in a melee behind the net.
The Wolverines (7-2-2, 5-2-0 CCHA) then allowed the second and third goals of the game in a four-minute span. Michigan responded with a goal quickly after the third FSU score when Murray netted a shot from Andy Burnes (Grand Rapids, Mich.) which deflected off a Bulldog defender in front of the net to make the score 3-1 after the first period.
Ferris State (3-5-2, 1-4-1 CCHA) added another pair of goals to drive the score to 5-1 halfway through the second period. After allowing the fifth goal, Blackburn was pulled for just the second time in his career. Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) entered the game at the 10:35 mark of the second and went on to stop all five shots he faced.
Michigan battled back with a pair of goals by Mink to cut the score to 5-3. With O'Malley pulled for the extra attacker, the Wolverines closed the margin to 5-4 on a goal by Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.). Despite several more chances, FSU netminder Vince Owen denied Michigan the opportunity to tie the game.
As the buzzer sounded at the end of the game, Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) was slashed over the head with a stick, precipitating a bench-clearing brawl. In addition to Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and Dave Wyzgowski (North Street, Mich.), Michigan goaltender O'Malley paired off with Owen for a fight at center ice. All three are ineligible for Michigan's next game.
In net, Blackburn made six saves and allowed all five goals in the game. The loss drops his record to 6-2-2 on the season. Owen stopped 24 shots for the win.
Michigan returns home to face the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 17-18). Faceoff on Friday is set for 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
