ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fifth-ranked Michigan ice hockey team defeated Alaska-Fairbanks 8-0 Friday (Nov. 17) night in front of 6,531 fans at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan's top line of Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.), Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) paced the Wolverines, accounting for eight of 23 U-M points on the night, including two goals from Cammalleri and four assists from Hilbert.
Michigan turned in a solid performance on special teams, converting three of seven power-play opportunities during the game and netting one shorthanded goal. Defensively, the Wolverines stopped Alaska-Fairbanks (1-6-2, 1-4-2 CCHA) on all five on its power-play opportunities.
John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) put the Wolverines on the scoreboard first with a power-play goal 9:41 into the first period. Hilbert's shot from the right corner of the Nanook zone was partially deflected into the air by UAF goalie Lance Mayes. After Mayes lost sight of the puck, Shouneyia tapped in the rebound to give U-M a 1-0 lead.
Michigan (8-2-2, 6-2-0 CCHA) extended its lead to 2-0 late in the second period on Cammalleri's fourth goal of the season. Cammalleri worked a two-on-one break with Hilbert into the UAF zone before Cammalleri fought off a check from Nanook defender Felipe Larranage and beat Mayes to give Michigan a 2-0 lead.
Just prior to the end of the first period, Michigan defenseman Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) suffered a game-ending knee injury. After getting tangled up with a UAF defender, he injured the same knee on which he had surgery during the summer.
The Wolverines opened up a 3-0 lead late in the second period on Shouneyia's second power-play goal of the game. Mink fired a shot from the left point that deflected off a defender and bounced to Shouneyia perched at the left post and he slapped the loose puck into the Nanook net.
Joe Kautz (Des Plaines, Ill.) picked up his first career goal as a Wolverine with just 30 seconds remaining in the second period to give U-M a 4-0 cushion. Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) skated past Aaron Grosul up the left boards and slid a puck past a diving Daniel Carriere to Kautz, who flipped the puck over Mayes into the net. Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) picked up an assist in Kautz's goal, giving him his third assist of the season and eighth of his career.
Koch's shorthanded goal early in the third period gave the Wolverines a 5-0 lead, and Cammalleri notched his second goal of the game at the 4:43 mark of the period to push Michigan's lead to 6-0. Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) added two goals during the final 10 minutes of the contest to round out the scoring.
Blackburn finished the game with 23 saves and improved his record to 7-2-2 on the season. The shutout is the fifth in Blackburn's career as a Wolverine. Mayes stopped 27 Wolverine shots in defeat, dropping his record to 1-4-2. Mayes yielded six goals before being pulled with 15:17 remaining in the third period in favor of Preston McKay, who stopped 16 shots and allowed two goals.
The Wolverines and Nanooks finish both the weekend and season series Saturday (Nov. 18) at Yost Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game... "The game was in the balance in the second period, and Blackburn was a factor. They had four or five point-blank scoring chances that on another night might have gone in. Then, we got the goals that we needed at the end of the period. It was not an 8-0 game. This Fairbanks team is a pretty good team, and in the second period they were every bit as good as we were."
On Michigan... "I liked our team tonight. I thought all four lines contributed and played pretty well. I thought we had a jump in our step. We did a lot of things better tonight. It was a good team effort. I think our players played well, but for the most part it was a team effort tonight. We got goals from different lines. It wasn't just the power play and it wasn't just the first or second line. I thought our defense did a good job considering it lost (Dave) Huntzicker."
On the injury to Dave Huntzicker... "There's not good news about Huntzicker. Right now we are looking at [him to miss] at least six weeks."
Sophomore Forward John Shouneyia
On scoring eight goals... "I think we needed it. We've got a pretty strong offense. It feels good. It turns the table a little bit and opens it up for us. Every line was really going tonight."
On the new lines ... "I think they're good.(Andy) Hilbert, (Mike) Cammalleri and (Geoff) Koch were working really well off of each other out there. We can be happy with it, but we have to go harder tomorrow. It will be a different game. Every line has got to be going again."
Freshman Forward Joe Kautz
On scoring his first goal... "It was pretty exciting. I didn't have a big celebration though. [The team] made fun of me for that. It was a good play by (Bill) Trainor and (Craig) Murray. Trainor passed me the puck, and I was open on the side of the net. I got [the puck] at the end of the second period. It's definitely going in my lovely dorm room."
