Wolverines Fall to Nanooks at Yost Ice Arena

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Alaska-Fairbanks defeated the fifth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team 5-2 tonight (Saturday, Nov. 18) in front of 6,339 fans at Yost Ice Arena. This marks the first time the Nanooks have beaten the Wolverines at Yost and just their second win in the 22-game history of the series.
The game started out with one of the more interesting goals ever scored at Yost. Just 26 seconds into the game, Michigan netminder Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) went to the bench on a delayed penalty call. Defenseman Mike Komisarek's (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) shot from the point deflected off a UAF defender's shin guards, and the puck slid the length of the ice and into the empty net to give the Nanooks a 1-0 lead.
Michigan (8-3-2, 6-3-0 CCHA) evened the score with a power-play goal (on the penalty on which the UAF delayed-penalty goal was scored) just over a minute later. Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) netted the goal, his fifth point (1-4-5) of the weekend, from the middle of a scrum in the crease.
Alaska-Fairbanks (2-6-2, 2-4-2 CCHA) took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission when Cam Keith redirected a pass from the left side through Blackburn's five-hole. The lead held until Michigan tied the game at 2-2 with just over three minutes remaining in the second period. With the puck in the air on a clearing pass, Andy Burnes (Battle Creek, Mich.) jumped up, caught the puck, put it on the ice and passed it across to Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) for the goal. The tally was Ortmeyer's third goal of the weekend.
In the third period, UAF jumped ahead with a short-handed goal and a power-play goal in the first 10 minutes of the period. Despite pressure from the Wolverines, the lead was held with solid goaltending by Preston McKay. Even with an extra Michigan attacker at the end of the game, the Nanooks found the net with an empty-net goal with nine seconds remaining to make the final score 5-2.
Blackburn made 13 saves in net and suffered the loss.
Michigan heads to Wisconsin and Minnesota over Thanksgiving weekend for the College Hockey Showcase. The Wolverines face off with the Badgers on Thursday (Nov. 23) in Madison, Wis., and then play the Gophers on Saturday (Nov. 25) in Minneapolis, Minn. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. CST.
