YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team took second place at the 31-team NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Saturday (Nov. 11) at Eagle Crest Golf Club. Senior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) paced the Wolverines with a ninth-place finish in the 6,000-meter race.
Michigan (113 points) was the runner-up to the University of Wisconsin (65 points), just like the two finished two weeks ago at the Big Ten Conference Championships. Erica Palmer, the reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Year, won the individual title with a time of 20:17.1, leading three Badgers in the top 10.
Wolverine senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle SS) and sophomore Jane Martineau (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS) also ran well for the Maize and Blue, coming in 14th and 23rd, respectively.
With Michigan finishing in the top two in its region, the Wolverines receive an automatic bid to compete at the NCAA Championships on Monday (Nov. 20) in Ames, Iowa. The women's race starts at 11 a.m. CST.
