ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team split a double-dual meet on Friday (Oct. 27) at Canham Natatorium in the season opener for the Maize and Blue. The Wolverines, tied for ninth in Speedo America's CSCAA preseason coaches poll, cruised to 202-96 victory over Iowa, yet came up six points behind in a 150-144 loss to No. 14 Wisconsin. The Badgers also collected a 198-98 win over Iowa.
U-M was led by a pair of freshmen -- freestyler Samantha Arsenault (Peabody, Mass./Gardner HS) and diver Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) -- who turned in two individual first-place performances apiece. Arsenault, a Team USA gold medalist in the 800-meter freestyle relay at the 2000 Summer Olympics, won the 200-yard freestyle in an NCAA consideration time of 1:49.64. She later finished first in the 500-yard freestyle, also in NCAA consideration time at 4:53.63.
Arsenault later added a relay victory, as she teamed with senior co-captain Jen Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS), senior co-captain Missy Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School) and sophomore Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) for a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:33.68.
Kelemen performed well in her first intercollegiate meet, sweeping both diving events with NCAA zone diving qualifying scores. She won the one-meter competition with a 269.93 score, and followed that up with a 278.40 on the three-meter board.
Also showing strong individual performances were Crisman and freshman Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS), who each turned in a first-place finish for the Maize and Blue.
