CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The fifth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team had its 12-game win streak ended with a 4-0 defeat at No. 3 North Carolina on Friday (Oct. 13) at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Michigan's only two losses of the season have come against UNC.
The Maize and Blue held the Tar Heels scoreless for the first 26 and a half minutes of play until North Carolina's Carrie Lingo broke through to make the score 1-0. A minute later, Tar Heel Kristen McCann put the ball past U-M goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) a minute later, at 7:30, and put the Wolverines behind 2-0 at halftime.
It was the same story for Michigan in the second half. UNC scored twice and blanked the Wolverines for a final score of 4-0. The shutout marks the first time in 23 games that U-M was held without a goal.
The Wolverines (14-2, 4-0 Big Ten) will have to regroup and face No. 4 Wake Forest on Saturday (Oct. 14, 1 p.m.) at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
