Beam, McCain Reach ITA All-American Qualifying Round

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis squad sent eight players to pre-qualifying action at the ITA All-American Championships held this weekend (Oct. 6-9) at the Stone Mountain Park Tennis Center. This tournament is the nation's largest collegiate tennis tournament, with over 300 participants competing during the three phases of action (pre-qualifier, qualifier and main draw).
Juniors Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) advanced to the qualifying portion of the doubles tournament with an 8-5 victory over Doug Devriendt and Martin Jirak. The tandem lost 8-6 in first-round qualifying action to No. 1-seeded Gert Vilms and Luzano Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 10).
Freshman Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and junior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) came within a victory of advancing to the qualifier in doubles, losing 8-1 to Bobby Reynolds and Eddie Coates in the third round. The duo opened the tournament with a first-round win over Damusa Robinson and Micah Thompson (8-3), and followed up with a second-round 8-3 victory against Michael Chamberlain and Joe Schmulian.
Junior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS), a transfer from Central Florida, had an outstanding start to his Wolverine career in singles action. He reached the fourth round before losing 6-4, 7-5 to Martin Jirak. Novak finished the tournament with a 3-1 record after posting a three-set win in his first match and a pair of straight-set victories in the second and third rounds.
Jackson showed tremendous potential as he posted a 3-1 singles record during pre-qualifying action. Jackson beat Mats Lindelof in the first round (6-2, 7-5), fought hard to collect a three-set win over Takeshi Itoh in the second round (1-6, 6-3, 6-3) and won by default over Stefan Hirn in the third round. Jackson's run came to an end as he lost a 6-4, 6-2 match against Jorge Haro in the fourth round.
Cox tallied a 2-1 singles record during the pre-qualifier, losing in the third round to Marcio Petrone (6-2, 6-1). Cox won his first two matches in straight sets, beating Michael Chamberlain (6-4, 6-3) and Brian Rosenthal (6-2, 6-3). Beam and sophomores Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) and Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) all split two singles matches at the tournament.
The Wolverines return to action Oct. 27-30 at the ITA Region IV Championship in Madison, Wis.
